I heard this story last year and checked with an "informed source" who said 'No Comment'. So still don't know if its true.

But I always thought the hand held speed guns only went to 180mph ... but I could be wrong?

Thinking about what to get next ...

I was stopped once in my Kenyan built Peugeot 504 estate with my wife , 4 kids & Kenyan housegirl driving up the steep long hill out of Nairobi to Naivasha.

Height c 5000 ft, 1960s design car with Kenyan low RON petrol.
The cop had a speed camera with a piece of paper over the LED display which proclaimed 100 mph!

That is the fastest I have been measured at & about 35 mph faster than the car was capable of downhill.

I didn't know that you were an old Africa hand John, we still have a 504 saloon that we keep as a back-up here as Peugeot continued to build them in West Africa into the 21st Century. coffee

Great car to go on tour with as wherever you break down, someone will appear out of the bush saying something like: "I'm a qualified Perjot mechanic sah". There'll also be a stock of parts available and shortly you will be on your journey. drive

Those new 406's (still produced here) are not strong cars and as for the imported 407/607's; they are not serious cars sah. doh

Yes we did a stint in Narobi in 1994. The Peugeot was pretty unbreakable given the roads & went all over Kenya in it from Mombasa to Mount Kenya.

I also bought an Indian Enfield Bullet 350 which was real fun for driving around town.

Lovely country, but a tragedy what has recently happened there. I agree with you re the older model Peugeots, ours is only rivalled by our Landcruiser which is now 12-years old and heading for 200k miles; still with original engine and gearbox. flag

Yes I was sad to leave despite the corruption. I have also spent time in Jo'burg & always fitted in a safari on a busines trip.

I can't get the love of Africa out of myself to be honest & we will have to visit again.

I know what you mean it remains forever fascinating, though it is a continent which evokes strong sentiments; which can be either way. smile

Personally I am not that keen on Jo'burg, but love Cape Town and we'll be there again later in the year. wine

Alas if you spply the mining industry it was Jo'burg.
I also have driven by motorbike across Morroco & Algeria to Tunis in 1976 (started in Devon & went via France , Spain & then back via Austria & Germany).

And I commissioned plant in Abidjan , Cote d'Ivoire in 1990.
