Very much so. Despite the fact that the new engine’s specs do not quite measure up to the V-8’s (177 bhp & 166 lb-ft vs. 185 bhp & 226 lb-ft), the car is absolutely transformed in terms of performance. The old engine hadn’t put out its rated power in years due to the detuning required to allow it to run on relatively low-octane fuel. The four cylinder weighs about 100 lbs. less, while the new smooth-shifting five speed gearbox makes using the available power much easier. The original Motor (or Autocar) road test shows a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds (I'm sure that this was achieved with little regard for the Moss gearbox). Based on the fact that the Morgan weighs about 1000 lbs. less than the Pontiac Solstice, which uses the exact same drive train and achieves 0-60 in 7.2 seconds, I conservatively estimate 5.5 to 6 seconds for the "new" car. With its variable valve timing, the four cylinder engine's power band is quite broad, and stepping on the throttle at 2000 rpm in 4th gear results in an effortless surge of speed.

Thanks for all the positive comments. The paint is original, in fact. It's a bit rough in spots, but I've decided that it would be a shame to paint over it.

Hi Daniel,

I've just read your very interesting article in the April Format magazine and I think that it would be very nice to publish it here as well, but we obviously need your permission as it is your copyright.

Do you have any objection to its publication as it is a super one-family history of your Plus 8 (minus 4 smile ).

Best wishes
Brian

Brian:

Thanks for your interest. I'm glad that you enjoyed my little story. I am still trying to have it published in a print magazine with a wider audience, but I see no problem with it being published here. You have my permission.

I can send you my original manuscript in pdf format, or in Word. Just let me know which you would prefer.

Best Regards,
Dan Stewart

I don't know if the Editor of Miscellany, the offical organ of the MSCC (Morgsan Sports Car Club) would be interested, but this is his email address for you to try:

If you would rather that I onforward it fon your behalf, please don't hesitate to ask.

For us on TM, we'd like to publish it and a PDF file would be great Dan, I'll PM you my email address. Looking forward to receiving it and posting it on the site.

With thanks.
