Plus 4 Ecoboost report - part 2

Ecoboost engine fitted with its loom last week and, this morning, popped into the car. Went in like a well greased oyster. Fits in engine bay very well with loads of clearance between the turbo and the side of the engine bay/steering column. fabricating the turbo exhaust manifold will be a challenge. Onwards and upwards.

That alternator looks like a close fit.

Great work, a lot less busy than Roadster 3.7 V6 installation thumbs

The alternator there is also a close fit as well as can be seen through nearside inner wheel arch cutout to accomodate LHD steering shaft.

Borrowed the wife's tape measure. You're right, the alternator is a bit tight but then it is in the standard Plus 4 GDI too.

So apart from the 250bhp, whats the advantage over the 156bhp GDI unit.?
(the GDI unit's bhp can be improved by 30 with a engine management software upgrade)
Is the ECO sport Euro 6 compliant, whereas the GDI has Euro 4/5?

Just done sum reading on t'net & it says the eco sport engine is a GDI unit with a turbo charger.
Also there are some concerns about GDI units because some raw fuel may be injected into the cylinders & not combusted.

The 'raw fuel' issue on some GDI engines (incomplete combustion meaning petrol diluting oil on valve stem seals and/or carbon deposits on valve head undersides) are both caused by poor swirl of the fuel pulses at low revs. Turbocharging increases gas flow velocity (and therefore swirl) and is more likely to cure the fueling issues, not worsen them. Periodically driving the engine hard is another way to avoid issues! drive

Think there some confusion here. There is an issue with all GDI engines to a greater or lesser extent. By definition, unlike port injection, no fuel mixture passes the inlet valves -- only air. This means pcv gases and oil vapour leaves deposits on valve backs and inlet tracts and eventually (often rather quickly) erodes performance and efficiency. This is why all my gdi cars, including the Plus 4, do not vent crankcase pressure back into the inlet system.

Indeed, and is why (in some Audi & BMW engines - I don't know about the Ford GDI) it is the exhaust valve stem seals that are affected... along with the other carbon deposit issues etc

I have not heard before of the "raw fuel" issue. I guess all systems see raw fuel from a cold start. The main identified downside of GDI technology (about which I have general misgivings -- very high pressure fuel, complex and expensive injectors etc) is that it cannot deal with blowby gases from crankcase ventilation which, for emissions reasons, are these days all funnelled into the inlet system. When inlet valves/intake runners saw fuel/air mixture these deposits were mainly washed off (particularly with decent quality high detergent fuels). This cannot happen with GDI's and there are many well-documented issues (with Ford, BMW, Volvo) of a rapid buildup of crud baking onto the back of valves and ports. I take your point on the raw fuel issue -- just another reason to have misgivings about GDI. cheers.

Reading up about the Ford Cyclone engine on my car, its interesting to note that its development was spurred by competition from GM's 3.6 V6 direct injection powerplant.

Although initial development also incorporated direct injection, Ford engineers found they could build a port injection engine developing more power and torque, taking advantage of charge cooling properties. Despite the advantages of direct injection, on balance they chose to follow this path aided by development of their individual variable cam timing and reduced production costs.
