Yes it was my trip with my girlfriend at the time. I still have the same +8, 30 years on.
Uk to Travemunde/Rostock and took the ferry to Helsinki. Drove across Russian border to St Petersburg, Moscow and then south to Minsk. You had to come this far south before heading west and home. The border into Poland was sealed for car traffic. So Minsk to Brest across into Poland. East Germany and home to Bristol, via W Germany, Belgium and France. Around 4k miles and it took over 3 months to organise all the visas, car insurance. Many stories.

I did a coach tour in 1975 after finishing A levels. I admire your guts to drive that.

1989 must have been quite interesting. Shortly afterwards Russia became rather insecure caused by local mafia developements.
Did you carry a spare canister or two?

Sounds brilliant. I had my first trip to Eastern Europe in 1990 going to Hungary and Czechoslovakia. There was such a short window to see it how it was before it changed forever. I toured those and other countries virtually every year in the 1990s - one of the best things was that you could revisit a place after just a few years and it was completely different. The pace of change was staggering.

The development of Eastern Europe after the times of the Soviet domination is a true success story driven by the support of the EU.

We could have wasted money for worse things... Thank god we did not!
