You've been taking advantage of the cracking weather we've had in this corner the last few days!.. I haven't been to the Bullers of Buchan for years... Just up the road so there's no excuse.

Great to chat today, these are good hill climbing spots, but only for a pair of boots, not the wheeled rockets you’re accustomed to. You’re right about the weather as well, non stop summer round here these days.

What an absolutely extraordinary place to construct a building. Do you know any history as to why it was put in such an inaccessible place?

No, Peter, there doesn’t seem to be anything published, the building must about 150 years old and is constructed from red granite blocks, the same as Peterhead’s breakwaters and prison.

I’d love to tell you it’s where we used to keep visiting Englishmen in quarantine when they came to visit, to protect us from any vegetables they might still have on them, but the truth is, it’s most likely part of the quarrying operations which took place here in the past.

It is indeed an amazing location and remarkable how well the building has stood the test of time. It would be extremely dangerous to go over there on the best of days, but it must be even more spectacular during a storm, it’s practically the most North Easterly point in the British Isles.

Speaking of quarried lumps of granite I can highly recommend The Lighthouse Stevensons: The Extraordinary Story of the Building of the Scottish Lighthouses by the Ancestors of Robert Louis Stevenson by Bella Bathurst

A great read smile

The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses is a few miles north of this in Fraserburgh.... Interesting collection and tours of Kinnaird Head Lighthouse (built on top of the old castle)... Worth a visit if your interests lie in that direction... Tho I have to say that unless you're hiding from the CIA or thinking of invading Norway, it's not somewhere you'd be passing on the way to anywhere else.

I'll bear that in mind next time I venture up to Shetland to visit an old pal of mine.
