Travels in New Zealand

A few pics of the vehicles we saw on our travels in NZ. Over 3 1/2 weeks we flew in 5 aeroplanes for over 56 hrs , drove 3500 kms in 2 hire cars and travelled on 4 boats / ferries.
A stunning place with so much to see.
On our way to Christchurch from Wellington we met a lot of hot rodders on their way to a car show.
I also went to car & plane museums at Omaka & Wanaka.

I would highly recommend the Gallipoli exhibition in Wellington

Nice pictures, we visited the museum at Wanaka, there was also a transport one in Nelson that was half cars and half weird fashion. Stopped at the Cardrona Pub to find it was closed for a private function that day.

Just returned from the Gallipoli exhibition. Going to have a few beers later to drown my sorrows at the Ireland/Wales result. Ferry to Picton tomorrow, this is such a wonderful country.

Tefistar, my grandad was with the 3/4 th Welsh Regiment at Gallipoli so though that focussed on the ANZAC experience it was very moving.
The ferry is great fun & the views amazing. if you are getting a hire car then collect that before our bags in Picton. .

Bervie1, we were lucky we arrived just 30 mins before a wedding so we could look around.

Great pictures John, thanks for posting.
We “did” some of Australia for our honeymoon and New Zealand is on our bucket list.... probably post retirement! Had you been there before or was this the first time-from your previous postings you always come across as being pretty well travelled (I guess mainly through work?)

HB, previously I had spent 22 hrs in Auckland at on of our sites before heading off to Melbourne. So not really , this was a bucket list trip.

John thanks for the pics and - predictably - I'm very pleased you included a shot of the first aeroplane to be equipped with retractable skis, the Auster J1B ZK-BDX. I saw it in a museum at Palmerston North?? sometime in the 80's but it must have moved. Other planes had flown on skis before the Auster but those resourceful Kiwis wanted to take off on wheels and then land on the glaciers on skis and so devised a simple but effective retractable skis system. The pilot slid the window open and reached out to a handbrake type lever mounted on the side of the boot cowl. And yes, NZ is, well, indescribably beautiful.

Auster,
not sure if it is the same plane but it is in an exhibition on Sir Edmund Hillary at the Hermitage Hotel in Mt Cook (the town not the mountain).
