Comps is a little village in the middle of nowhere and for a dozen years or so was without a fuel station. The village, which has a small hotel/restaurant and four or five cafés, is quiet at this time of year but a lot of people pass by in summer, en route to the spectacular Gorges du Verdon or looney bikers, or people arriving in Provence via la Route Napoleon. The local maire, with help from the département and the State, decided that a fuel station was essential for locals as well as tourists. It was a nice touch to commission an artist to brighten up an undistinguished building.

I love the artwork. By coincidence, this morning I was re-reading "An Omelette and three glasses of wine" which is a collection of Citroen themed magazine articles compiled by the late Andrew Brodie with writing from the late Phil Llewellin and some magnificent photography from Martyn Goddard. It is a must read for anyone with respect for the products of Citroen pre- Peugeot ownership.

A few miles to the south of Comps (about 20 minutes' drive) near the village of Figanières is a large house called La Terrissole. This was the holiday home of André Lefèbvre, the celebrated Citroën engineer, who was responsible for the Light 15, 2CV, H-van, DS, etc. From the early 1930s onwards, prototypes were taken from Paris to La Terrissole in covered lorries. Lefèbvre and his colleagues worked on them in a barn on the property and then tested them on the surrounding roads. This continued without problems until 1952 when a DS prototype without body panels was the target of the first automotive photo-scoop, carried out by the French magazine l'Auto-Journal. Fuller details of this incident and its consequences can be found in a chapter of my book, The Good, The Mad & The Ugly.

There's a line of 5 garages in Ambleteuse that, although the garages themselves are looking a bit tired, have a very nice set of art deco tiles on them. Each garage has a different car.
