Velsheda at Croabh

The J Class Velsheda.. visiting Croabh marina just South of Oban in 2001. The craftsmanship was astounding as was the dimensions of her winches ropes and fittings.. The last pic is one of the docking procedure, but they managed in time..

What a beautiful thing. If memory suffices the name is an amalgam of the Daughters names.

Here for a good time not a long time!!

She is such a beautiful boat, and the way her rig dwarfs everything else in the marina in your first photo well demonstrates her imposing scale.

I had a look around her and a drink on board in Cowes week one year in (I think) 1985 when Les Williams was skippering her; she was in nothing like the splendid condition she is now in. I knew Les quite well, having helped him (with some of my University mates) to prepare FCF Challenger for two-handed racing for the 1982 Round Britain race which he did with Bob Fisher, and then subsequently converting the interior to a cruising spec.

Terry Brabant had rescued Velsheda from the mud berth on the Hamble in which she had been quietly rotting for years. Terry didn't have the money to do a proper restoration, but he deserves much credit for having the vision and determination to get her back afloat and sailing again, even though he had to do it on a real shoestring budget (her steel mast was made from gas pipe !!).

The revived interest in the J class saw Velsheda receive the no-expense-spared restoration she deserved in the 90s under the expert supervision of Gerry Dykstra. I have found myself racing around the same cans as her in Saint Tropez on a few occasions now, and the sight of these magnificent craft under sail at close quarters is really something.

Sorry for posting the pics in the Morgan section instead of the general gallery.... Duh..!!!

Giles thanks for the insight relative to a bit of the history of Velsheda, very interesting. I think I may have seen a documentary on TV some years back of someone living on a J Class and struggling to restore her, I think they got as far as having a replacement mast made and stepped at Cowes..?

The Beken images of the J Class vessels in action were and still are astounding.

Don't know if you chaps have seen this footage from Antigua (taken from Velsheda as it happens) of a collision between Svea and Topaz during pre-start manoeuvres. Topaz is on starboard tack, and Svea on port should have given way. You can see one of Topaz crew being thrown overboard. I hope everyone was OK - I haven't heard to the contrary.

FWIW, I've been involved in two serious collisions in yacht racing - the first when Jinger ale, a J29 I was on got rammed by a Sigma 36 during Cowes week. We were holed below the waterline, and only avoided sinking by heeling the boat with the crew up the mast and getting up the Beaulieu river for a lift-out. The other was more recently at the Voiles d Saint Tropez, where we T-boned a J109 which tacked onto port directly into the path of our Swan 43. Neither case was a fraction of that J class collision, but in both cases the impact was huge, knocking us off our feet, and the repairs ran into many thousands of pounds.,

Fabulous craft, why can't these noddy's be taught to drive and have a lot more respect for such things hide Rich boys playing is the answer I guess.

The same behavior I see displayed at Goodwood Revival every year when priceless cars get munched it's a lack of respect I think.

An equally fabulous craft, Pink Lady although mainly for the crew of eight, all girls and skippered by Kirsty Morrison during Antigua race week 2010.

The 37 foot Carriacou sloop Pink Lady sailed without winches!

It was customary in the party spirit of race week for the girls to have towels on their heads as Pink Lady made post race parade through English harbour having on this occasion being third over the line. Skipper Kirsty in darker pink hat.

Celebrating later.

Thanks for comment Richard. Forgot to mention that Kirsty the skipper had a surfeit of Pink Lady caps. During the time I was there it was not unusual to see guys wearing them in the marina bars and restaurants. It was assumed they were handed out for services rendered. Inevitable I suppose to see one such guy wearing two though! - respect innocent
