I do hope that was something as simple as the wheel nuts not being done up tight. The fact that there is no hub attached to the wheel makes me suspect that.

It is more serious and a stub axle has sheared off then that is going to be a serious problem , not the least getting the car transported to the repair shop/garage.

Ouch, it does look to me like the wheel came off the hub.
By the positioning of the hub cap & wheel maybe they were changing tyres and the jack failed.

I never witnessed it myself but I believe it was supposed to work, if I recall it was part of the advertising spiel at model launch time.

I had a 1977 CX Diesel. What a comfortable car that was but rust was the major enemy.

So, it is not only plus sixes loosing their front wheel in accidents (thinking of the demonstrator that got crashed inNL)

I think it was fairly common for a flat rad to throw a front wheel.
