West Highland Wandering 2003

In response to Guten`s post of his trip round the NC 500 I have taken the liberty of posting a few pics of part of a West Coast trip we made in 2003, a time before the name NC 500 was thought of.. smile

I also took pics of "Stack Polly" (incorrect spelling to aid pronunciation) as we visited it and scrambled to the summit to take a few pics. Hopefully I can add a few other images taken on the trip.

Stunning, has been for thousands of years, long may it be so.

Needs a kilt for top photography marks though!

Pleased that you found interest in my old pics guys.
That visit was in mid October of 2003, and the weather was warmer than we might have expected in high Summer, the morning after we returned home, turned on the TV to see reports of the whole area covered in snow with folk cut off all over the North West...!!!

I wore a kilt when in the Scouts, do I get points for that ewn..? smile

I’ve decided to award extra points for NOT posting pictures of blokes in kilts, there will no doubt be a more appropriate forum elsewhere for that.

Regarding the hot and cold, had the same In April a few years back, glorious warm sunshine, then sudden snow at pretty much that exact spot.

Great set of photos George , I would really like to do an NC500 but each time we try to get together some dates and look at bookings, it becomes difficult. A vicim of its own success?

I know a couple who did it this June when the country was twixt lockdowns and they reported it as being very quiet , but I feel that was highly atypical .

Pleased you liked my pics Andy, any touring info I learned at the time will be well out of date by now thus I suspect of little use.

One of my Porsche friends (Gordon, ex-farmer/rally navigator) runs a guest house in the borders with ample parking which I think Hamwich and others made use of for an overnight stay to break their journey on their trip up North some time back. Which reminds me I have not seen Gordon in years...Sigh !

Welcome | Wallamhill House | Dumfries & Galloway

When we headed North one of our regular stops was the Pine trees hotel in Pitlochry.

Pine Trees Hotel - Hotel in Pitlochry

In 2003 we used the hotel in Altbea as a base from which we enjoyed day trips out around the North West to Ullapool/ Stack Polly etc. etc. etc.

The hotel was pretty basic back then but suited our purpose at the time.

Aultbea Hotel | Sea Front, Aultbea, IV22 2HX | Hotels & BB's

and on the run back down to Central Scotland we stayed overnight at the Loch Melfort hotel.

Loch Melfort Hotel - Country House by the Sea in Oban Argyll

From there we drove via the Rest & Be Thankful then down the side of Loch Long over to Helensburgh then home avoiding, the more usual and somewhat busier run from Arrochar over to Tarbet then down the side of Loch Lomond. towards the Erskine Bridge and M/way links to the South.

Of course WEATHER is everything and one has to be well prepared for ANYTHING, but if retired and you can head north at the drop of a hat, keep an eye for a big low in the offing and hope you don`t encounter too much mist/fog cyclists or camper vans etc.etc.etc. though in truth Covid would seem to be the largest concern...

Great thread and lovely pictures, the measure of which is that we want to be there too
