Alfa Romeo spider

I’m reliving my youth, I’ve bought a bargain basement money pit, the Pininfarina designed Alfa Romeo 916 spider. These were the last model to be manufactured in the Arese factory.

Good points, it was local, cheap and has a huge history file, but most of all, it’s an Alfa!
Bad points, MOT failure caused by but not limited to: air bag fault as well as brake balance and brake pipes. Not their prettiest effort either, but like most Alfas, they grow on you the more you look at them. for me personally, I don’t like silver cars, the paint is shoddy anyway so I might have a go at painting it myself, Rosso Corsa red, but the real fun is spending as little as possible to make it road worthy again.

These were expensive cars when new and it shows, all the stuff which shouldn’t work works perfectly despite the reputation, the interior in particular looks like 30k miles, not the 130k it has actually done. I have the original invoice from 1999 when the first owner paid £24k for it and waited nearly a year for it to arrive. The roof is a bit tatty here and there but it’ll do the job, it’s manual and it all work fine.

Silver wouldn't be my choice of colour either , Rosso Corsa definitely!

The interior does look very tidy. the wheels look unmarked, and the body looks pretty straight.

As long as you are prepared to work on it , I would say you will have a really nice car there

Looks good. That interior is very smart.

Can we assume that the airbag parts will common to several other cars and therefore readily available and inexpensive ?

I've always fancied one of those but never had the nerve to buy one.
Really hope it works out well.

Lovely. you are a brave man. I have a mate in Cape Town who has a 1960s one which is lovely. I have had a few Alfas and touch wood so far they ran well.

Nice, and unusual enough to be a head-turner ... wedge cars are a real period piece! (And it's an Alfa!)

You're brave parking it on your drive if the brakes are iffy ... you could end up in the marina! 🙂

Cheers lads and it’s okay Keith, the hand brake just about manages to hold, I was so confident I didn’t even shove a brick under the wheel out of sight of the camera, anyway, it has lots of fibreglass panels, the huge clamshell bonnet for one, it might float. laugh2
Re availability and commonality of parts, no and no, Alfa don’t keep parts in production very long so it’s make do and mend for most things. The air bag is going to be a real pain in the butt, it’s not just the wires under the seat, and since it’s mentioned on a previous MOT that the light was covered with tape, some numb-nuts has already been messing with it, probably the same clutz who crushed the seam of the sill with his jack.
Amazingly, along with the history file, all the handbooks are there, all three keys, the jack, spare wheel, tool roll with tools, including two adaptors for the locking wheels stud and the standard studs to put back in.
Bangers are good fun, i can’t see this one being a total disaster, it’s better than I thought and I’m really starting to like the look of the thing but I’m embarrassed to admit, that’s now six silly cars I have not counting proper sensible ones, I should start a wee museum. laugh2

Forgot to say, the one thing I didn’t get is a stereo, no big deal, a 1999 stereo would be rubbish anyway. if and when it’s roadworthy, I’ll bu a cheap Bluetooth one.
