Wife and I will have to get motorcycle endorsements on our licenses. We passed our written tests at the SOS but we need to take a "riding" test. Anyone done this in their M3W? We have no bikes and no interest in one. Nobody has any clear answers yet.

I have looked into this and contacted many people, none of which were very helpful - from emails to in person at the SOS. Online there is mention of a 3 Wheeler Basic Riding Course or 3WBRC in a few places but no information on where this class is available.

Successful completion will allow students to waive the Secretary of State skills test and may qualify them for an insurance discount. Students must provide their own three-wheel motorcycle and proof of insurance. The motorcycle must be properly titled and registered, display a valid license plate and pass a safety inspection.

The best info that I got was when I went to the SOS, they gave me the booklet to study and a list of all the places by county that offer courses. This list differs from the one offered online. I found a place near Lansing that is a Bring Your Own Bike place, church parking lot, 20 min and $35. All the other places that I looked into were minimal $50 and 14+ hours of classes relating to two wheeled junk.

Also, the 3 wheeler is a "motorcycle" so it can be used for your road test at places that require you to bring your own bike.

So, I was reading through the Michigan Secretary of State Motorcycle Operators Manual (MOM) in preperation to go take my test and get my permit so that I could register for the riding course to get the CY (motorcycle) Endorsement on my drivers license. I get almost all the way through the booklet, all the way to page 53 when I find this gem under the "Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles" section:

• Vehicles with enclosed or semi-enclosed riding compartments

• Motorcycles or scooters with two close-set wheels in front (contact patches less than 18.1 inches apart) that lean and maneuver like standard, single-track, two-wheel motorcycles
or
• Vehicles with any other departure from the above standards.

This is what the state considers a 3 wheeled motorcycle that does require an endorsement:

So, looks as if a Motorcycle Endorsement is not needed after all!

Good news, it's a shame these things are always at the end though isn't it?

Yes I was rather excited; I did log on to the forums at midnight just to share this info.

And, yes it is dumb that they put such useful information at the end, but they did get me to thoroughly study everything before that part.
