Hi I have had Citroen,Nissanand Mitsubishi similar size to the vans you mention.
They were alright .I now have had a V.W. Transporter for 3 years. It is so reliable and most of all the reasale value of it is one of the best.
The servicing is every 20k.
I think the Mercedes would same in reliabity and deprecation.
Hope this helps
Andrew

Dean,

Either will work we have a reasonable number of VW Caddys on the fleet and in the years we've been buying them we've not had any major mechanical issues. If you get the Transporter go for the 2.5 engine over the 1.9 which is a little gutless in that size of van on the motorways.

We have a VW T5 California 140bhp and 2 Merc Vito Sport Vans, one a 150and the other a 204bhp V6. The V6 has been nothing but trouble and drinks fuel.

The VW is a lot more solid than the Vitos but doesn't handle as well, maybe with the weight of the fittings inside. It's very quiet and comfortable.

A few months ago we decide to buy an additional VW Transporter, contacted the VW van centre in Liverpool and sent our guy over for a test drive. Following this we tried to buy one from them but sales never responded to any messages left, so we tried the VW van centre in Wrexham and got the same treatment! I don't think they want to sell them .... and we hadn't even discussed prices.

About this time the new Transit Custom came out so we went for a drive in one (125bhp) and it was at least as good to drive as the VW and the deal we were offered was fantastic, thousands cheaper. They look good as well. So we bought one.

Since then we have bought another 2 Transit Customs, one a crew cab LWB in silver and it looks and drives great. For what we paid we would have only got a 2 - 3 year old VW. They are certainly worth a look.
