Chaps, any ideas on this subject please? On my 'new' car I have quite a few windscreen scratches and have been considering buffing with jewellers' rouge but I have read 'somewhere on google' that this RainX stuff does a good job of filling scratches. I'm not keen on vandals resolving the matter with a brick! Any wise words welcome. Cheers, Dave

Dave
I had a scratch on the inside of my new plus 8 screen. It was replaced by the factory under warranty.

I have used some jewellers' rouge where I had used a nylon pot scrubber to get a splash of some sort of resin (sprayed off a passing truck) off my Alfa's windscreen. Unfortunately it was a new pot scrubber and more abrasive than I would have imagined. I won't do that again It did a reasonable job but the scratches were fairly deep and there are still faintly visible marks. I don't think you will do any harm. I used a new polishing buff and a battery driven drill. I have been thinking of having another go with the power drill. The buff did not leave any visible swirls. If the scratches are fairly light and somewhat localised it is probably worth trying. Be careful about getting a small section too hot. I was worried this may lead to cracking the glass. Some of the professional glass people offer this service so it may be worth asking around.

Peter, sounds very similar. Interestingly the 'professional' people did offer to do 'light scratches' for more than my glass insurance excess. They suggested I would be better off if 'someone' threw a brick at it because I have some deeper ones too! All repairs can cause 'lensing' which is distracting but insurance companies prefer that to replacement by all accounts. Trying to avoid replacement and may have a go at DIY then. Cheers, Dave

Needs a bit of "elbow grease" but even by hand it gave a noticeable improvement.

Glass polish is available from restoration specialists.(try Frosts). It comes as a reddish powder which is mixed with water and applied as a paste with a drill mounted hard buffer. It's made in part with diamond granules as far as I know. It works but takes ages, gets very hot, and spits the cutting paste everywhere so paintwork needs masking. I used it on my MGB and it was a reasonable result, but thats all. Rain X do a glass polish - a white cream, but I doubt it will shift any scratches that you can feel. Rain X water repellant won't do much in my experience.

Thanks for all your comments, all worth investigating. Autoglym Glass Polish first then I suspect your red powder Dave is jewellers rouge and yes I expect it will get everywhere!
I see Bumble is getting the 'Dave Treatment'. enjoy!

Yes indeed Dave. Fairy dust I call it. Just to clarify my comment on Rain X liquid water repellant - that is excellent at dispersing water. Highly recommended.
