The thing to bear in mind with the likes of Facebook, Twitter etc is only post photos, information etc that you don't mind anyone having access to.

The thing to bear in mind with the likes of Facebook, Twitter etc is only post photos, information etc that you don't mind anyone having access to. Again, I wish it was that simple. By agreeing to the terms of use you agree to the use of 'tracking' cookies or the friendlier term 'social widgets'; these sit active on your device and can be used to report back everything you do on the device. The obvious things they can track are: sites visited, time spent on sites, other apps (programs) you open and use, people you contact (call, email, etc). Therefore, you don't have to be actively using the site for them to be gathering data. Some of you may remember there being a bit of a fuss about how it was proven that the app Angry Birds was being used by the developer to track your phone use (data mine) and send reports back to them? http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/27/nsa-gchq-smartphone-app-angry-birds-personal-dataNot only was the information being mined but the developers of the game and sold onto other commercial entities but it was also being gathered by other interested parties who could intercept it. A lot of this information is easily found if you take the time to look for it; however, there are equally many powerful companies who want to downplay it. A few years back I met with a research scientist who had developed an app that sat on your phone and constantly scanned all the other apps to see what they were doing in the background. The purpose was to gain a clear picture of what data these apps were gathering and how often they were reporting it back to the maker of the app. The findings of this study were both fascinating and scary. Even the most innocuous free games were regularly reporting back the users activity (non-app related) to the software developers. The apps did not have to be running for the widgets to be tracking use and reporting it. If you access the site, have their apps on your phone and use their 'product' you have to consider that their tendrils are invading your privacy whether you are actively using their social network or not.

I only keep Apple Apps on my phone that I use regularly. the rest are deleted and I only have Apps that serve a real purpose - in my view. So no games, no social media.
My phone is turned off at night, every night. I'm told that
The only "social media" site I visit is this one and that is always on a Mac, not a tablet or phone.

WhatsApp was purchased for $22 billion by Facebook. Ask yourself why. For that reason I am shifting to Telegram and will be cancelling my WhatsApp account shortly.
