Tony, a lot of good thoughts here. Have you inquired about rental instead of buying. I had business up and down the west coast awhile back and used my Hertz prestige card and used an Audi 8 sedan for about a month at a flat rate.Traveled all up an down the west coast,Seatle to LA. Might be cheaper than buying, and selling anything in a down economy is hit or miss.I am sure for a fee you could pick up in California and drop somewhere else.Hertz prestige has some nice cars, new jags, caddys, audis, even boxsters...Buicks and Chevys if you wish....

The thing to consider is if you by an older car and it breaks is that an adventure or a vacation wrecker...Porshe Boxsters are cheap and abundant, new GM cars like the Pontiac G8 can be bought at major discounts over the next few months while gm depletes inventory.Call the Morgan dealer in LA buy a car from him drive across the country and sell the Morgan to the east coast dealer in Copake. You could probably pre do the deal...a random thought!

Tony, I have done a fair amount of touring by car in USA & Canada including 3 (of 4) of the Morgan inspired adventures MOA 1-IV - these started in 1990.

Suggest you look at the informative: <http://www.morgansoveramerica.co.uk>

This will give you some great ideas and inspirationThere are diaries and even logs of breakdowns!! Dennis Glavis at Morgan West as well as Bill Fink can be highly recommended.

The nerd that I am I still have the route maps and instructions should these be of any help
