is the diff' oil a very "thin" one??

I did a run yesterday from w.mids to northumberland and back and the odd drip which i had noticed from somewhere near the back end of the propshaft previously seems to have worsened - the whole underfloor behind the diff is wet to touch and looks like some of the waxoyl has been washed way. The oil seems very thin.

I had nominally attributed the drip to pinion oil seal.

How much oil can i afford to loose?

btw, this may be a dumb question but what is the thing, with a nut on the bottom, which pokes out through the hole in the floorboards at the rear??

cheers for tips

Ok, so I guess the oil was still warm when I looked at it earlier, it's now less runny. Having found DaveW 's post about changing diff oil, I. pretty certain this is where its coming from, I dont have a pit or ramps so I cant really determine the source of the leak, the drain plug is pretty oily, but then so is everything else.

I have no way of knowing how much lube ive lost, my dilemma is how far can i drive it as it is?? anyone care to hazard a guess??

I am about 40 miles away from mike duncans, tomorrow i need to get to Dudley (about half way) to pick up my jeep from the repair shop.

Will I make it?

Why not get to Dudley and ring Mike or Ben from there ( you might not get'em before 9.30.)

If worst comes to worst, they've always got the trailer?

Regards,
G
PS failing that if you want to PM me asap, I've got a mobile number for Ben and I'm happy to give him a ring first thing and get some info if that would help

Cheers, on reflection I think I'll give him a ring before I set off - my schedule tomorrow is not too rigid fortunately!

No such thing as a dumb question, Sawman. The thing with a nut on the bottom is actually a bolt. It's the drain plug for the petrol tank.

Thanks hamwich, I did further examination and figured it out - its easier to investigate in the daylight!

The stuff that I had leaking out turned out to be a combination of petrol and dissolved waxoyl, which is why it looked so odd. Its a pity I have practically no sense of smell, i might have put two and two together earlier!

all sorted now im glad to say.
