My Aeromax has been off the road for a month or so, since one of the tail window broke...

Having recieved a new glass from MMC, I drove the car to my local body shop for fitting.

When I strated the car, the rear wheel caliper was stuck against the disc

The handbrake was off (I never use it)

I reveresed the car and heard a noisy clonk zhen the caliper freed up

When stopping the car at the body shop, which is half a mille from where I live, I noticed some liauid on the internal face one of the rear rim

Likely this is some brake fluid

Would this be a one off when the caliper unstucked or is it more likely that the seals have gone?

If that is the case, should I get both sides done?

It's not uncommon for the calipers to stick to the discs when stood idle. And they will let go with a bang. I think it's very doubtful that the seals have gone. Calipers rarely leak, even when they get old. Wipe the rim and see if you can make out what it is, but it might just be condensation. Go for a good run and get the brakes hot, then keep an eye on them, and see how it goes.

Thanks. Yes it isn t uncommon and I wasn t bothered by the clonk. But i was surprised seing some fluid on the rim. You may have a point with condensation.

When the glass will be rebonded, I will clean the rim and go for a ride.

That is when my swine flu will be gone. I feel dreadful for a couple of days...

My series 2 used to have a similar problem if left for a while.

Like you I never used the handbrake but it was always my conclusion that it was binding.

I never sorted out the cause, but thankfully the car never failed to stop.

It tends to be worse if the discs are hot when the car is stopped. (Reason why on a track day, never use the handbrake when the car is at rest after running on the track- use wheel chocks- and NEVER put the handbrake on)

In a previous thread where I had that banging problem the next time I used the car after washing the car and putting it in the garage straight after.
I received lots of useful replies all from the forum concerning moisture causing the steel of the disc to oxidize and jam in the narrow gap between disc and brake pad.

The next time it happened I examined the discs immediatly before driving and there, clear to see, was a disc pad shaped patch of very course 'rust' which was rubbed off during the journey.
