Dave, thanks for the photos - I have had a quick look underneath today (raining) and access is more restricted than I thought. I will get it up on ramps as soon as weather permits for a better look.

Jim & Frank, thanks for the operation tips. It is low mileage (7000)so it may be 'stiction' I suppose. No, I'm not married to Judy (Jackie is the better half). Punch is an old (RAF) nickname!

Graham, thanks for the tip. I've checked the button on top of the lever and it is screwed on ok.

Can anyone suggest a workshop manual for future reference?

Welcome to the forum Punch!

As for the workshop manual - he's called DaveW. Anything he doesn't know isn't worth knowing!

Another reason for parking in gear, with the handbrake off, is when you leave it in the garage for any period of time more than a day or so. If you leave the handbrake on, you'll find the rear drums may stick.

It will hold on a hill for a hill start, though, and should be as good at that as any handbrake on a modern car.

This happens to me every now and then and this suggestion always cures the problem; unscrew and remove the handbrake release button(anti-clockwise)- it is spring loaded and dribble clean engine oil down the inside of handbrake. Bob's your uncle - problem solved. Hope this helps

I recently had my 92 4/4 on a ramp with the handbrake on, for a couple of weeks.
The rear brakes then seemed to be binding when first dropped to the floor again. It has now released to normal but i will have a good look over it asap.
As a rule i park in the garage with the handbrake off and never had problems until now. Whatever car I am in I always leave it in gear when parked as an insurance.

Oops! Welcome to talkmog!
I bought my 4/4 last june after many years of hankering. My dad was a coachbuilder and introduce me to a Morgan when I was 7 - he was repairing it at the time.
I love the simplicity of the car.
I never fail to smile when i get into it - its great therapy!
As for the mechanics - for the older cars they are basically simple good engineering. Take your time, ask questions here, work out the logic of whats involved.
My handbrake has now freed itself after basic iperation checks and use of the car so its back to general improvemebnt stuff and reading DaveW articles.
Due to no comprehensive manual the links to Davew!/gomog etc are a godsend.
Enjoy the future witg=h the car and get involved with fellow owners.
