The following test results for stopping distances gives food for thought:

VW Golf V fitted with non-studded Continental ContiViking Contact 3 (80 km/h to full stop):

                locked wheels      with ABS
dry pavement:           45 m        32 m
snow:                   53 m        64 m
ice:                   255 m       404 m


Summer tires on dry asphalt (80 km/h to full stop):
Html:
                                       with ABS
Toyota Avensis (2003)                   25 m
Volvo FH 12 (38 ton truck)              59 m
Libherr LTM 1055 (36 ton mobile crane)  74 m


Summer tires on wet plastic (ice simulation) (50 km/h to full stop):

It's also interesting to look at using your ABS vs not using it. My partner has a DVD which came as part of his driver training course which shows the difference between cadence braking, threshold braking and ABS braking in an Elise. The difference between the three (in the same car) really surprised me!

That said, one of the F1 drivers once said WRT driver aids (launch, traction etc.)

With them turned off a driver is capable of going a couple of hundredths quicker, maybe a tenth or so per lap... the problem is doing that every lap for 50 or more laps!!

Threshold, then cadence, then ABS I think - cadence and ABS were very similar, which isn't really all that surprising I suppose. I don't know if the results would vary from car to car though. I think the key here is that threshold is best if you are a good driver; most people are best off just applying the brakes as hard as they can if they need to.
