Wash with some saddlesoap.
You could apply neatsfoot oil afterwards, but that might leave marks on your luggage.

the guy who made the straps is a whizz at that sort of thing, worked at jag for many years in 'rag n fluff' ie trim shop as well as being a saddler, now doing stuff for a famous low volume uk car maker, MMC were keen to sign him up but he has too many other commitments
