Hi Everyone

I first sat in a Morgan at the 1975 Earl's Court Motor Show and have wanted one ever since. A few years ago my wife treated me to a hired 4/4 for a weekend (significant birthday!). I was grinning from ear to ear for the entire time. The good news is that I am now in a position to afford one to share garage space with my Porsche 944 Turbo.

So I have a few questions before I take the plunge. I am thinking about a +4, say around 1996 to 2000. What I would like to know is, when were galvanised chassis, all aluminium bodies and stainless steel bulkheads introduced? Also is having the latter such a big deal. In other words, is the mild steel version very rust prone and if so how easy is it to repair?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Just to say Welcome to the forum. cheers

I am not knowledgeable enough to answer your questions in terms of dates. I hear about total re builds on older cars with some being off the road for years. Cars which have probably been driven hard. So I suppose its a matter of do you want one to tinker with or one to drive, funds permitting of course. Happy Hunting shades

Welcome smile

I too will await someone far more knowledgable than myself to answer your questions.

Suffice to say with the weather as it is down my neck of the woods I would suggest it will be at least tonight before people head away from their cars and start logging on. Roll on spring and summer laugh

I agree with Boshers. I should be out there 'Polishing'. Nah, 'DRIVING' drive

Just a thought. If you google 'gomog. you will find 'Morgan Experts Panel' where you can post such a question.

Their 'workshop manual is worth a look as well. They have is chart called Morgan Time Line which 'may'be interesting? idea

I have a short door 97 +4 it has an alu body but the firewall / bulk head and the scuttle is mild steel.

Not sure if the chasis is galvanised. I waxoyl every year.

I think the the long door cars (aug? 97) on are the spec you talk of.

Good luck

Body Panels are Ali on the +4 from 1998 onwards
T16 engines for these years (easy turbo conversion for those who want more power)
Dec 1991 chassis were moved to wider +8 spec
From 1986 onwards chassis were power coated or Galvanised (so 96 onwards should be ok)
Will have Mild steel bulkhead which will need to be checked inside at the bottom of the foot-wells on both sides where it meets the cross member. (see up-side-down) "U" shaped metal bar under the car.

Wot he said! smile

I have a mid year '98 +4, which has ali body/wings, stainless bulkhead, galvanised chassis.

There's a photo on here somewhere...

Found it: http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/galleries/31232/Tinkerbelle#comments

(May be selling in a month or so - waiting to see whether a property deal is happening).

Cheers,

Job done!

I am now the very proud owner of 2000 4/4 complete with body and chassis spec I was looking for.

Indigo blue, stone leather, walnut dash, stainless luggage rack, heated screen and chrome wires - great!
