THis is a 'spin off' from our discussions of Simon's new site updates and innovations where, you will recall, numerous references were made to Captain Pugwash. I'm also a massive fan of the 'Black Pig' and its crew- but this one remains my all time favourite ( I'm putting it here because I didn't want to hijack the other thread)

surrender !!

Oliver Postgate was a true talent and combined with Peter Firmin, their creations touched the lives of so many children.

My personal favourite is still Bagpuss

I also loved Ivor the engine. Maybe because my Dad drove steam trains on GWR and was from Wales.

My ifes' favourite is the clangers.

Great times.

I still occasionally have a look at the fantastic model work on the Thomas the Tank Engine TV series. Awe-inspiring as a child and a lovely foil to the original stories I read.

Simon,
I read somewhere that Postgate got the idea for the 'look' of the characters in N the N from the Lewis Chess set.
Great bit of lateral thinking that!
regards,
G

G, I'd like to read Postgate's biography as he seems to have been a very interesting character both from the body of work he left as well as the little history I know of him.

(another book for the growing pile of 'things to read' work )

Frank,
If we're talking about a REAL piece of history, what about this?

year: 1952

Sadly, I remember it all too well and those striped Mechanics Overalls . Also Muffin? the Mule.
It was May 1952, my father put himself in 'hock' to buy our first ever 'Pilot' brand TV ready to watch the 2nd June Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 2nd oldgit

As we all know Muffin the Mule became illegal following this event due to complaints by the Animal Protection League.

My dad was mostly out taking photos at this time. This one was Kai Tak Honk Kong airport when nothing around it was more than two stories high !

He had a really nice camera.

I feel sorry for the kids coming up now with the crazy stuff on TV, ritalin has a strong future based on this !

Alistair.
worked in Hong Kong a lot in the 80s and early 90s, so have 'fond' memories of Kai Tak- not least coming in on a 747 at an altitude when I was level with people's washing lines!

The new airport may be a lot plusher and the rail infrastructure from Lantau is a work of engineering excellence but it just doesn't have the same buzz crazy2

Regards,
G
