We stayed at Anstey Hall on Saturday after a day at Newmarket races. Although to bills itself as a wedding venue, they also do bed and breakfast if there's no wedding going on.

What a fantastic place. A grade 1 listed stately home, filled with many interesting pictures and beautiful antiques. The rooms we stayed in were really magnificent and spotlessly clean. The room rates were unbelievably good value. Plenty of secure parking for your Mogs.

The house belongs to confirmed petrolhead and serial entrepreneur John de Bruyne. John was extremely friendly and welcoming when we arrived, and I had a fascinating chat with him.

His father, Norman de Bruyne was a Cambridge scientist and aeronautical pioneer who led the huge advances in synthetic glues before WWII, working (amongst other things) with de Havilland, providing the glue for the Mosquito. John himself has been involved in many different businesses. It was he who bought and tried to resurrect the Gordon Keeble from the receivers (say unsuccessfully). He was also chairman of upmarket saddlers & luggage maker Swaine Adeney and Brigg for a number of years.

In the bar are original renderings by Pietro Frua of the first Frua Phantom VI drophead (which John told me he had just sold; I guess that must mean it was he who bought it at the Bonhams auction in 2015.) https://www.classicdriver.com/en/article/cars/one-rolls-royce-phantom-vi-consul.

In the coach house yard are a number of interesting vehicles; a Bentley R type, a Hooper bodied Daimler (maybe one of Lord & Lady Docker's ones), a bond 3 wheeler, a wooden hustler 6 wheeler and various other stuff. A Vincent Black Knight is parked in the breakfast room.

Enjoy your stay. I can also recommend the Green Man pub in Trumpington, we had a good meal there.
