Has anyone else had to have their front brake disks replaced due to 'being stood for long periods'? My 4/4 Sport is 6 months old and has needed new disks which the factory have told me are not covered by the warranty. Mileage is 2300.

you could have them "sanded" to unstick residu of the brakepads, friend had the problem on his GT3 (not the friend with the RS)

I have been told that they were too bad to be skimmed. Stated problem was that pads had water on them e.g. after washing car this water had an effect on the disk surface that was severe enough to cause brake judder. I am surprised that modern materials cannot stand this.

I'm not surprised, my brakes seize if left overnight after washing car and I am now in the habit of kicking the tyre to free them off next day whether I'm using the car or not, I used to drive away to free the brakes but almost stalled on one occasion and was worried I might bust something such was the clang when they freed

Always dry disks after washing especially if you are leaving the car for a while. Wheel cleaning agents can make this proem more pronounced.... A quick blast after cleaning should sort this right out.

Thanks for your reply, it is some consolation that it is not just my car.

You've probably seen the posts on this before( and if so aplogies) but just to complete the picture: watch the rear drums as well. Never leave the car parked up in the garage for any length of time with the handbrake on. Make sure it is off and leave the car in gear.If you do do otherwise, then it's odds on that the shoes will stick after just a few days.
Cheers,
G

Could this be the cause of my brake judder when I have driven through heavy rain, and left the car for sometime? (e.g. on a ferry). Food for thought.

Steve,
I think that'a possible explanation. I had a similar juddering problem when I fitted EBC discs to the front of my 4/4 I didn't really have much choice in what discs I got to replace the OEM items because I didn't want to change the calipers and there were very few disks which would have fitted.
THe EBCs were very poor. I got loads of judder at all speeds but especially if the roads were wet. I had them looked at by a couple of specialists and in the end it was sorted temporarily but in addition they pitted very badly, so I took them off after a couple of months.
Might have been just that I had a poor bacth but they weren't good at all
Cheers,
G

I also have EBC disc. (I have heard of others having problems with these). There is a sometimes a judder on slight brake pressure, but under full pressure are OK. It is for this reason that it was so noticeable last month when it was wet/raining. Fine now confused2

Latest from the factory on this:

Don't wash the car when the car is hot. If you do so the calliper may stick. If you do have to wash the car when it is hot, move the car backwards and forwards an hour or so later. This should free up the calliper. If the calliper does stick on it may result in a calliper mark on the disk, causing vibration. The disk may then need to be skimmed. The labour costs to do this and then bed in the disk may be more than fitting new disks, assuming you need a garage to do the work for you.
