Not sure if anyone else has come across the same issue, but I have a 3 year old MB 300 bluetec hybrid and yesterday it was in for a "B" service (115k miles) and was advised that the starter motor had done 388,700 starts and at 400,000 start it has to be replaced. Normal question was "how much" and the MB dealer sad it had never been done by them before and as its 2 months out of warranty, then technically I have to stump up for it! I assume "starts" are that high as it cycles between normal running and hybrid usually at low speeds. Anyone else had this issue yet?
Thanks
T

Is that stop/start technology? Or is that a lot of motoring? Seems very high to me if its not stop/start tech.

I turn off the stop start on mine, not because I’m fearful of wear as the car is changed at 6 months but because I just don’t like it, especially on a part cold engine the last thing I need is it switching off.

Steve,Rob,
Its the stop/start technology that seems to ramp it up as my normal commute is 230 miles a day and mostly fast A roads or motorways. I also tend to use it in Sport mode if ever in the city as I find stop/start technology annoying!!
I was gobsmacked that they came up with such a high number - obviously another get out for them on warranties - or is that a bit unfair? Must add though its been the best and most comfortable car I have ever had!!

Our C43 has this feature, as did the E 350 Diesel.
It only works when the engine is warm and there is enough power in the battery.
In Sport Plus mode it is disabled....

I have never heard of this 400,000 start issue, but will enquire.

Isn't the key question "How much will it cost me to replace the starter motor now vs how much will it cost if I wait to see if it fails and replace it then?"

400,000 starts seems arbitrary - were those starts in -20 degrees in MB markets like Canada/Russia/Nordics or in temperate climates where the engine will turn over easily and the starter motor will last far longer?

Talk about business development. Thats a bit saucy.

Its out of warranty so we want to change it now.

Let it run until it does go.

Too much technology on vehicles these days. That’s why I like my Morgan so much.😉

Thats about 3 starts/mile lifetime. Thats ridiculous!!!!. How about the flywheel, is that worn out too?
Thank goodness I don't have that system on my E350
