Has anyone who has converted to new/modern/stainless/expensive kept the original/not-too-rusty/tinny/cheap versions because mine are beginning to be commented on by strangers and let the rest of the car down! Anything suitable for 1988 Plus-8 wanted
Thanks ~ John

John,
I've just converted to a pair of John Worrall's round 'Lucas replica' mirrors so have the OEM rectangular one from my 2000 4/4

It's mirrors only because John's mirrors allowed me to use my exising brackets and stalks without unscrewing them from the car. If you can use them, they are in good nick
PM me if this helps
regards,
G

Have you tried giving them the 'Solvol Autosol' treatment. A tube of cream cleaner stuff. idea
I would be surprised if you cannot bring them back to sparkling.
The wheels on this old Peddle car were rusty when I bought it. I could not get the wheels re chromed without damaging the solid tyres - so bought a tube.
Great on Stainless and Chrome, even on Aluminium. The finish lasts as well. thumbs

Especially when you apply it with a toothbrush!

Seriously, the problem with Morgan wing mirrors - of all ages and types- is that very often the interlocking components aren't made of / finished in the same metal.
A typical example is the knurl screws which hold the upper( male) part of the mirror stalks into the the bottom( female) half of the shaft which then attaches to the body. Very often these are mild steel, so rust and streak the whole thing. Before you know it, the damage is advanced and even hours spent with Solvol won't budge it because the actual chrome finish is pitted
Before I fitted John W's Lucas replicas, Iactually has Yamaha m/c mirrors fitted for that very reason!

G

Thanks G but it is indeed the mirror and "stem" that I need most as the corrosion on the stem is deepest and beyond polishing out as the metal now is deeply pitted

So, anyone else got something handy at the back of a bench?

I have a pair of mirrors which I took off my previous car when I purchased Round ones. They are the original oblong ones but are in good condition -- not pitted!
You are welcome to them for the price of postage (or you are welcome to collect them from me in Ireland if you feel the need!!!!!) PM me your address and I'll get them off to you.

Regards from the Emerald Isle

Sadly it seems I need the OLDER base units as well as mirrors
stems as newer mirror-stems don't retro fit old bases

Is this the first recorded example of planned obsolescence by MMC?
