Moto Guzzi planned to make a replica of the Moto Guzzi 350 Bialbero. This is the same model that my father in law, Duilio Agostini, rode at the Isle of Man and in the GP circuit in '54 to '56. They did, I believe, make a very small number but without the hand-beaten magnesium alloy dustbin fairing. Probably they chose the wrong model to replicate. The 500cc would have been of more interest these days.

I think the original plan was to make 100 replicas but the project never really got off the ground. There are a small number of V8 replicas that have been made using original spare parts and reproduced parts at enormous expense. These were made privately but in co-operation with the factory.

Not so long ago there were a number of people arrested for making and selling replica Ferraris and other classic sports cars. Given that these skills exist it is beyond me why more modern, "inspired by... " vehicles are not openly produced. Naturally the major manufacturers that still exist would object to the use of their name but I can think of a number of models where the Morgan formula of modern mechanicals with a classic body could be interesting for small series production.

Even in the Morgan world I imagine there would be interest in a rebodied Morgan Plus 4 in LSR style. It would cost a lot less than a replica E Type too.

I must agree about the SLR. I have only seen one of these in the flesh and they are lovely cars.
Perhaps the Plus 4 Plus is still in the Morgan memory however they now fetch serious money.

For me the Plus 4 Plus didn't really work. I know people who have them love them, but, above all, I don't like the roof line.

The re-bodied Spanish Plus 4, that we occasionally see the picture of, is much, much nicer.

If I had more cash than I knew what to do with I would certainly consider doing a re-body of a Plus 4. It would not be so difficult as the basic structure is there.

If all this, from lightweight E types to Astons to the Guzzis and the Nortons isn't an indication of an overheated collector car market, I don't know what is.

A pal bought his Ferrari 328 for 26k about 10 years ago. He reckons it would now fetch 85k and looking at the adverts of cars for sale, I reckon he is aiming low. There are examples at 130k. That's simply silly when you can buy a much more competent , reliable and comfortable Boxter for 50k or an F type for 65.

The difference is that in 10 years time the Boxter will be worth nearly nothing but the price of the classic will have doubled.

The F Type won't be much better either. Jags take a long time to gain value.

Hang on. Fact button.

We all said these things years ago, Porsche 930 going to be worth nothing, E type worth nothing. Where are we now.....

I don't think it is more than a bubble but we cannot say that an F-Type R V8 will be worth nothing. China pulls the trigger and oil goes through the roof. NKorea lose the plot and the US go defensive on trade. Electric cars become mandatory in cities.

Mad max takes over and the last V8 is a Morgan (that leaks and cannot keep a charged battery). Sounds like a film script.

You may - or may not - be right. But given that cars are pieces of engineering designed for a function there is no rational reason for the price differences. In performane terms, in terms of fun, and of reliability and a dozen other factors, the Boxter is a better piece of machinery. The only reason the Ferrari is more highly valued is that people believe it is more highly valued. Self fulfilling prophecy. And that sort of herd behavious can change rapidly and usually does.

There have been several hundred thousand Boxters made against only 7,400 328's. It's rarity that drives values more than a perceived value.
