Sorry for making you peeps wait, but as some of you may of known, I had too source another car due to the previous specialist ruining a very good/solid shell.

So here goes.

The basic is for this car to run in the CSCC Future Classic series.

We will be up against some stiff competition in our class, so this is going to a full major build to be able to compete and win against them.

I hope you enjoy the pics. I will do my best to keep this updated as quickly as possible.

Let the dismantle begin, plenty of pics being taken, along with plenty of bagging up & labelling.

So if my memory has not failed totally then the single lamps make it a 316 or possibly early 320carb ?

Lots of photos please.

I had a 1976 316 which I really should have looked after and kept. It was Jade green, still got a pair of front wings somewhere, a dashboard and the twin headlight grilles which I'd intended to fit but never got round to it.

Will follow the progress with interest!

Now the rear body work is being stripped out.

The engine going in,

A 2.3L - 6 cyl which is going to very special, we are looking at 50mm individual throttle bodies, custom built crank and roller valve train, high compression and a rev limit of 9750rpm!

Fab. And now for thread drift - can you recommend brake pads for the 4/4 sport and fit them next week?! I’m using the 4/4 sport competition for track days and road use and for the occasional race.

I can recommend a very good pad material, can you pop in this week?

I will look to see if I have a set in stock.

Now back to the thread!

I'm sure the badge on the boot lid say's 316. Or am I missing something here?

I guess it doesn't really matter what the original is given it will all be very special by the time it's finished.

My mistake and you are correct, this is a 316 which had the 1800cc engine

Thank God you got a bit of the dogs back on that photo . Flicking through it I spotted a head and thought your hair had grown so much you had been doing a Robinson Crusoe in the garage. You are lucky my Staffy never helped me just lay under the engine so I could not go out without him more like a fox than a dog.

So today amongst my other work I successfully removed both front wings.

Then I removed both doors & finished off removing all the sound deadening from the floor area & rear seat panelling.

As you can see, there is a repair patch on the passenger front foot well this will be addressed along with the hole in the drivers side front foot well, possibly new floor pans.

Overall I am amazed at how solid this car actually is.

There is a major job happening on the her tomorrow, which should be exciting!

Thanks Lawrie.

Your photos take me several years back in time. In the 1980's I used to help in a Rallycross team. We converted a Talbot Sunbeam TI, a Triumph Dolomite Sprint (with a Rover 3.5 V8) and a Rover SD1 with 3.5 V8 engine. I think I still have some photos somewhere in my archive.

So today was one of many of the first big jobs of the whole build. Nerves certainly kicked in!

Also began the removal of the original seat mounts.

Blimey! Exciting stuff. Do you cut the whole roof off in order to be able to fit a roll cage?

It certainly does help but its not essential. The roof has been removed for 3 reason. Firstly the original had a sunroof, secondly the underside of roof had the sunroof mounting points which made it heavy and thirdly I have a non sun roof light skin to put back on.
The windscreen surround was removed because it had a rust hole, as I can but new it made sense to fit a new one as we are at this stage.

I am long way off from starting the stitch welding process. The car is being fully stripped first, lightened where possible, then its off for a 3 stage dipping process. Then the build begins

Today I carried out a mod on the scuttle panel which since doing my research all the BMW teams carried out.

I then set about working underneath the car

The full exhaust system was removed.
Then work on removing the rear subframe, diff & suspension began. Pics tomorrow.

On NSU TT and Simca Rallye they were put (almost) that way for racing.

Today amongst over work I began the task of making carboard templates for the new interior rear panels, which will be made out of aluminium.

Now the shell is ready for the trip to Birmingham on Monday for its holiday at a company called Enviro-Strip.

https://www.envirostripgbltd.com/

She will be spending a couple of weeks there having the full works carried out on her body.

Thank you

After the items I ordered today, you will be pleased to see this is certainly no thrown together build.

As we are aiming for such light weight, we have got Tillets latest carbon fibre seats, Lifelines latest Novec 1230 Gas fire extinguisher, plus more.

I popped into work today after been out for a meeting & a little parcel had been delivered. Inside the box were some of the new interior components.

Keeping weight to a minimum is the name of the game.

First off we have 2 sets of the newly released light weight Schroth racing 6 point harness.

Next up we have the latest in fire extinguisher technology. Novec 1230 gas is used instead of the water based foam used in the cheaper systems. Novec gas systems use a smaller bottle but are equivalent to a 4L bottle, so FIA approved.
This weighs in at only 2.5kg where as the foam which would need to be a 4L bottle for FIA approval which would in nearly 8kg.

The last toy to show you all is by Summit Technologies. This is a solid state digital control system.
Click on link for the details - https://summit-technologies.myshopify.com/products/talon-solid-state-digital-control-system
I use their Raptor blue tooth steering wheel system on another race car, it works amazingly.

More to pics and info to follow.

Great thread.
That 316 would have done me for an everyday road car. Loads of life left in it!
I will pay a visit when you have the shell back Lawrie. You can tell me about the shell you couldn't use...

Looking at those, a harness will be required just to stop the driver sliding out of them - and that's before engine start! grin2

You'd be very surprised how grippy they are with a race suit. Of course the harness still does the major work

By the time I'd jammed my fat backside into that seat, I think I wouldn't be in the least surprised how grippy it is!

Similarily I tried to fit into a plus4supersports and failed miserably -- didn't matter how nice the seat looked it wasn't built for a front-row forward's arse!!!!!

After last/this year the more road baised tillets in the Coupe are a bit pinchy on the sides. They are surprisingly more comfy than I expected when first seeing them.

A very small update for you folks who are still interested......

Today I received back the steering rack after having it fully stripped & rebuilt with a heavy duty phosphor bronze rack bush and modified slipper pad with grease nipple to aid lubrication of the steering assembly.
This is now a high ratio rack with only 2.5 turns lock to lock, originally it was 4.

This is from a BMW specialist in Germany. As you can see in the pics, The majority of the parts are original BMW new old stock. So happy with this. Another order is going to be placed with them very shortly.

Not much but more updates will be coming in the near future...

First up, the standard original steering column has been lightened & modified. The steering wheel location has had a FIA WTCC splined union taped, screwed onto original thread. The spline piece has then been drilled to be puddle welded & then fully tig welded along the base join.

I also managed to source from BMW in Germany an original OEM, unused front engine bay subframe for the 6 cylinder engine.

2nd update today...….

As the same as period examples we have chosen to go with the single wiper conversion.

The car now wears a non-sunroof roof...

The battery housing in its position.

Any guesses what the hole in the 'B' pillar is for?

Today the BMW & certain parts went on a very important road trip. The car will now be away from me until after Xmas.

Don't worry I have plenty of ordering of parts & fab work to be getting on with whilst she's away....

Hole in B pillar?
Space for the roll cage to pass through?

Nope, the cage is staying inside the passenger compartment.

Fancy another guess??

Money pockets for drive-through KFC moments ?
Brolly compartment for those cold open ex-airbases when someone punts you into the citty-litter ?

Another update... Woohoo I hear you shout!!!

Alternator lower bracket, lightly bead blasted before it went off to my engine builder.

The same was done for the gearbox bell housing, before work is carried out on this item.

Then it was time to build up the new dampers. These are a bespoke build by KW themselves.

The newly redesigned Tilton pedal box. Like the Alfa, this is a floor pedal box with each of the 3 master cylinders reversed & sitting under the feet of the driver.

Very light as well.

The exhaust is nothing special, just a standard Caterham system

I was able to source an original & undamaged automatic gearbox bell housing from the correct period.

Once this has soaked in the degreasing tank over the weekend, I will clean off the grime & then like the manual bell housing, I will softly bead blast.

I'm also hoping to have update pics of the BMW shell very soon.

New update...

Pics sent to me this afternoon, the start of the fabrication work being carried out.

Just like the Alfa Romeo roll cage, I asked for the cage to run as close as possible to the pillars of the cars shell, this is to aid visibility for the driver.

New rear interior floor sections have been made.

This shows that the rear bulk head panel & parcel shelf have been removed.

Yes I agree the car was it very good condition for age, but then this also meant I had a good base to build a good car

Which is what's needed.
You never did say what was wrong with the one you went all the up to Scotland to collect.
Anyway, I failed to see this car in the early stages, so will have to meander down for a look as it goes together thumbs

Basically the previous so called specialist doing the initial build, royally mucked up the shell when doing HIS own slap dash welded in roll cage. Never min, with what is planned this will turn out beautiful.

We have a roll cage update.
I'm really pleased with how this is progressing. Loving how tight the cage tubing is to the body shell.

The reason for the masking tape is for working out the correct angle needed to allow for the easiest access but with safety/rigidity of the roll cage kept.

You will probablly of noticed that the original rear parcel shelf & bulk head have now been removed. The reason why will be obvious very soon.

Managed to source a BMW E12 (5 SERIES) diff running the ratio we wanted of 3.9:1. The only problem is the fact this is an open diff. An original E12 LSD diff is very rare & if you can find one for sale they are very expensive.

I should mention the reason for using the E12 diff & not keeping the E21 diff.
The E21 diff had a huge problem of over heating back in the day when the E21 was raced. I've read quotes & scene pics of the diffs glowing red etc, this was because the diff casings were very compact which meant they couldn't hold much oil. Alpina did release a bigger rear panel which would allow the casing to hold more oil & it was heavily finned but over heating did still occur.
The E12 diff is relatively straight forward swap with only small modifications required to the rear subframe.

Now this diff will be fully stripped, all the internals checked, reused or replaced with new items. The casing & drive shaft flanges will be bead blasted & re-plated.
Hard to imagine looking at it now but this diff will look brand new once completed.
I have sourced a very well known UK company to make me a LSD & internals, their products are already used in high class motorsport.

Don't know much about BMW racers so the E21 info was new (mind you I seem to know less and less as the years go by!).
Probably not new Quaife internals then?

Correct this time not Quaife even though I have used their products in the past & they have operated faultlessly.

Update on the shell, I think you will agree its beginning to take shape now.

The roll cage is now looking amazing but still a little way to go until its finished.

The mount for the fire extinguisher bottle brackets is now installed.

Here we can see the pedal box is mounted on a raised custom mount.
The top steering column location bracket has been made & joined onto the roll cage.
The Summit Technologies switch box mount has also been secured onto the roll cage brace bar that runs behind the dash board.

I hope you like this update. Any questions please ask.

Thank you. It's taking a lot of time & effort. I'm having to do a lot planning in my own free time.

Currently prepping about how I'm going to go about doing the dash board layout

It does look very good.

One question which may be obvious to some (but not to me).

How does approval of a roll cage work?
Is some form of certification required or is it all up to each scrutineer?

Hi Paul

Roll cage certification works in a number of ways

To compete in any race or rally your roll cage will need to comply with either MSA or FIA regulations. (Effectively, the MSA is governed by the FIA so if a roll cage design complies with FIA regulations, then it is also eligible for MSA events). There are some instances where the FIA allow certain design features where the MSA do not (and vice versa).
A roll cage design must comply with the MSA/FIA technical regulations published in the MSA Blue book. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure his/her roll cage complies with the technical regulations appropriate to the event they are competing in.
The certification process generally allows for a lighter roll cage because it is a bespoke design where the diameter and thickness of each tube is optimised to achieve the overall strength required by the FIA/MSA rules.
In order to compete in MSA/FIA events every vehicle, which has a certificated design of roll cage, should have a copy of a valid certificate to present at scrutineering. The company I use certify all of their roll cages. All roll cages comply with MSA/FIA regulations and receive a Letter of Conformity for competitors to present to scrutineers.
To obtain a certificate for a self-fit roll cage, the installer must complete a weld test.

Many thanks. That makes sense. Now I understand how it will work for your E21.

We want to be out testing her by mid- late summer this year.

I don't think she will be going to the ring, but never say never.

Engine update time peeps.

18 Air horns were purchased, 6 of each length. Basically different lengths of the air horns produce different characteristics when mapping. Short length for power, long for making torque. We will play about when on the engine dyno to see what makes the best. All of them are the same diameter which is 45mm.

These are the 3x pairs of the 45mm individual throttle bodies we have had made & will use.

6x Bosch 440cc sized fuel injectors.

Lastly here is the pics of the engine after a dummy build this morning. We checked that the intake ports on all parts (throttle bodies, inlet manifold & on the head) before the top end was removed to have all 3 parts are ported together.

In this pic you can see the billet aluminium alternator I've had made by Wos Performance.

Bear in mind this was a dummy build of components. Th engine will now get stripped down, components rechecked.
The engine will look totally different once finished.

The exhaust system in the pics wont be used. A new system will be designed as a one off for this engine.

I hope you all like, again any questions please ask.

Shiny ally trumpets! smile
Missed the bit when the seats went in, so catching up.
How much lighter is the new alternator, compared to a standard one?

A little update for ya....

Began trial fitting the new bespoke motorsport coolant radiator. This still has a little way to go until I'm happy with the end fitment.

Fabricated up a new rear parcel shelf & rear bulk head panel. As you can see, this has been moved further back from the original position, this has made the top of the rear suspension turrets accessible inside the passenger compartment. This was done for a number of reasons.

This little fella has sprouted up!

Oh the 'B' pillar hole on the passenger side, had something added today... A little bit more fettling is required until I'm happy but you get the idea.

Hope you like.

Graham, this mount is just behind the hold in the gearbox tunnel where the original shifter would of poked through.

Plan is to have her finished by summer & then carry out a full extensive testing programme. 2020 will be its maiden campaign season.

Very small update today

The new union fittings have arrived from America. This is a M12 X 1.75 thread on one end & a -6 aero-quip fitting on the other.
These are to be used on the gearbox.
The one you see here will be used as a oil return, the other will be welded onto the gearbox drain bung.
This means I can now progress on designing & making the gearbox oil thermostatically controlled cooling system.

I will be doing the same on the differential.

VERY Interesting: what temperature should the gear box be when running?
The AMG has both engine and gear box oil temperature readout. The gearbox seems to run about 20C cooler than the engine, but I don't think it has a cooling system as such. It is well finned.

Peter I think your C43 will have a gearbox oil cooler/radiator. Most of the AMG models do. It is a very small radiator in up near the engine rad generally. Both of my previous models have had them.

I'll ask the technician at Mercedes;
The Plus 8 and all S4 Aeros have a small heat exchanger that uses the engine water to cool the ATF fluid. It is, on Tarka, mounted under the N/S wing, just above the suspension upper arm.

Update time folks.....

Internal panelling now taking shape.

The dash board is now mounted & looking very neat. Looking forward to having this trimmed in black alcantara

Looking good. Black alcantara would be good...non reflective.
Will you be putting cooling ducts for the driver in the dash or are there plans for scoops/ducts elsewhere?

BTW - What are the internal panels made of and how do you stop them "drumming" - assuming that this is an issue.

What will the final body colour be, that may have a factor on the choice of alcantara colour for the dash... mustn't clash!!

Thank you Paul.

The internal panels are made out of aluminium, if you look closely you will see they have had a bead pattern add to the panels to add strength.

I believe so Graham & will look the part. Its a lot more expensive to do over flocking, but I am not a fan of flocking, as its wears off.

I have collected the BMW today from having the fabrication work you have seen in the recent updates.
She looks so much better in the flesh, the pics don't do any justice for the craftsmanship that's been carried out.

I will post up pics tomorrow, including pics of work I've not shown you lot yet.

If you are going with Alpina white then how about using the 3 BMW M tones, red orange blue. Blue Alcantara seat covering?

BMW & Alpina are helping me on this project. I have been given some lovely original Alpina items, like the brass plaques they used & a set of original used set of the blue & green decals.

I will find a picture

This is the outside look I will be 90% be going for, minus the bumpers & chrome trim.
Our car will be sitting a lot lower as well.

Thoughts?

Alister, are you thinking same blue as on the decals?

Well I was but it will show a lot of dirt ?

Blue on the seats, green alcantara on the dash and other areas. Black on the carpets and main areas ?

Its only the dash that will be trimmed.
The seats are carbon fibre from Tillett & the floor will be painted body colour with grip tape down to stop the drivers feet sliding about

BTW - What are the internal panels made of and how do you stop them "drumming" - assuming that this is an issue.

Thank you Paul.

The internal panels are made out of aluminium, if you look closely you will see they have had a bead pattern add to the panels to add strength.

Thank you for that - I see it now. They are not going to make a noise!

Love the planned colour scheme.

So are you ready?

Here is a biggish update. Part 1

Due to modifying an original brand new LHD wiper mechanism, to operate as a single wiper, I had to have a new bespoke mount made under the scuttle panel.

Here is the bespoke coolant radiator now sitting in its new position. It was only the 6 cylinders that had the front scuttle panel opened up. This was to allow the room of the bigger engine

Next up is making sure the fire extinguisher bottle sat on its new bespoke mount properly.

I'm very lucky to of been given from Alpina an original MOMO steering wheel.

Who remembers this pic which I called a butterfly mount?.

Part2.

Well this is what the mount is going to used for.

The 3 sections of welded on plate are for the aero-catch pins, which will secure the boot lid into place.

As you can see, even I have plenty of room in the drivers seat.

Side shot of the lady with her composite doors fitted.

Just like the Alfa Romeo I built for the same client, I'm so happy that the cage runs so tight to the body line, that it almost becomes invisible to the eye.

I hope you liked this update.

Yep I have been very busy but couldn't of done it without the help of Robinson Race Cars - www.robinson-race-cars.co.uk
I got to know this team when I worked for Lanzante. Since I started the race team with Henry at Williams Automobiles (Williams Morgan) I have carried on the relationship to a great success.

I also am very lucky to be having support from some great companies on this build.

Looks all more than promising. Very good and detailed work!

Please, if it is finished so far, post also a video with the sound of the engine!
