I suspect that this will be Honda's last Diesel engine, especially for passenger cars. The VW scandal has killed Diesel passenger cars in America. My daughter and I went to downtown DC last month in her "Clean Diesel" VW and nearly ran out of fuel because several gas stations that used to sell Diesel have stopped selling it. Needless to say my daughter will be returning her VW before the buyback ends this summer.

Diesel would be phased out faster if more criminal auto executives were put behind bars. America has imprisoned two guilty VW executives, but Germany has protected at least 5 VW executives who should stand trial in America. As far as I can tell they are still walking free in Europe.

I notice that the Guardian report stated that trucks produced less Nox2 than cars per litre of fuel. What does this translate in absolute terms assuming a 32ton truck gets, what, 10miles or less miles per gallon where as the latest cars get 60 or 70 mpg. Diesels cars have never been popular in the USA. That is how VW came to fiddle the exhaust figures in an attempt to increase take up. No one has mentioned the poor monkeys that were used in these tests by VW, BMW, Mercedes and Bosch. I think these firms are despicable and I for one will never buy their products.

The worst thing is that the disgusting fraud, especially VW's, has intensified the general debate on diesel. But diesel is not as bad as its reputation, if you see what Honda and also Mazda is able to develop.

The consequences of this scam are handled very differently in Germany than in the USA. Here, the responsible people run free. On the contrary, VW CEO Martin Winterkorn was dismissed, but he received a further year's salary of 17 million euros afterwards. That's why they really love him here...haha.

The ordinary people here remain seated on their diesel and have to reckon with driving bans. There's no buyback here. On the contrary, it can happen that the owners have to pay several 1000€ for hardware upgrades and still have no certainty if they will be allowed to drive their car in a few years. Everything is still pending!

What VW offers the owners here at least in Germany is a lousy little incentive when they buy a new car and return their Euro 5 diesel. You can guess what VW will do with the cars afterwards...sell them a second time to North Africa or elsewhere where the regulations are weaker.

Only marginally, VW manager Oliver Schmidt represented VW to the American environmental authority and lied to them.
He was so stupid or so naive as to spend his vacation in Florida with his family from Germany. That's why he's doing seven years in jail in the United States (and of course because he is guilty)
On the one hand, I think that's right for the Americans to send out a strong signal, but the really bad bosses of VW don't help him in any way.
They are rather glad that Schmidt is the pawn sacrifice.

I strongly condemn that. The people in charge must be ashamed of this kind of study.

Without wishing to be considered a Troll, what ‘crime’ did VAG actually commit?
As I understand it; their cars met the test requirements where they were required to do so under a specific test regime. Surely that’s what they were required to do. As an analogy; does this mean that every child who received (say) private tutoring to in order to pass his/her exams will be called a cheat and removed from his/her school/university.

As full disclosure my own +8 is both green and has zero emissions.

(It left the factory painted blue but I have since repainted it green, the MoT requirement for emissions is to emit ‘no visible smoke’ - it does not, hence de-facto ‘zero emission’).

I’ll put a flame suit on and allow you to tell me where i’m wrong.
