I have now removed the top half of the steering column (split universal joint type) and removed the internal steering column (one solid lump of steel,no sliding bits). Have taken pics along the way and will post up here soon for others interest.

steering top bearing renewal http://s865.photobucket.com/albums/ab220/mildred1952/ruby%20steering%20repairs-%20top%20bearing/

The top bearing had a lot of play and would have failed the MOT test later next month.
I have tried to remove the bearing but it wont come out?
Is it the type of part that is assembled at the factory and one has to buy the complete top assembly and bearing assembled?

have now just found this link, but the J Worrall one is for a +8, wonder if I can use it for my 4/4?

thanks Robbie
sent a help to Melvyn Rutter and they say that they dont have any parts for my column and that they can rebuild it for me @ 325 pounds UK, plus post and packaging to Australia?
total maybe over $1000.00
no way
surly I can get a bearing pressed in to the old housing and be on my way? that is all that is needed...
thanks for the info anyway
regards
Peter

Robbie,
I would have any decent garage or metal bashing shop could do that. You need to heat it up and use a 3 legged puller to pull it out & press to put the new one in.

John Worral at HoE is very helpfull & I am sure could tell you if the +8 part would fit if you e mail or call.

I got the kit off John Worrall and replaced the bearing with with no trouble at all. I wonder how Melvyn Rutter manages to rebuild columns if he doesn't have any parts for them?

still waiting for J Worrall to reply, might not be open on Saturdays?
I have noticed that the bearing is its-self turning in the housing! I think that it should be tight if pressed in and not move about?
That coupled with wear on the shaft part of the bearing made up the loosness at the steering wheel.
