I'm thinking of replacing the 195x60 tyres on my Plus 4 with 195x65's. These will fill the wheel arches better and slightly increase ground clearance.

Apart from the effect on the speedo, has anyone any thoughts on how it will affect handling?

Doubt you'll notice any handling difference Ken. You might out on track, but for general road use it might improve the comfort slightly - slightly more tyre wall to deflect / effectively a slight increase in suspension travel... grin2
However, I do suspect you'll find slightly reduced steering at full lock (assuming your tyres do touch the rubbing strakes at present?).

Cheers,

Be careful of the clearance of the inside of the wings near the indicators as not sure what clearance you may have on full lock.

Ken, I've done the same on my plus four-I can't say that I've noticed a problem . Someone here said I think, that the speedometer might be more accurate, or have I imagined that? Meabh

Might have been me?
Though the speedo on my +4 was reasonably accurate on 55 Toyos...

Certainly the Land Rover is much more accurate on it's 7.50 R 16s than with the original 205s...

Cheers,

Thanks for your replies.

Meabh - did you change because you thought they'd look better? Here are a couple of links that compare tyre sizes: 1 and 2

By chance, I found how to adjust my speedo and set it so it over-reads. Strangely, doing so had no effect on the odometer which seems to be fairly accurate. Presumably fitting larger tyres will make the odometer under read the distance travelled?

If it is presently correct, then yes.

As I said in another thread, the mileometer and the speedometer are independent of each other (just happen to be in the same instrument enclosure)...

Cheers,

On my 2008 +4 four-seater did this change from Yokohama C-Drive 195/60R15 to Bridgestone Touranze ER300 195/65R15 in order to get 10 mm more ground clearance. I changed the spare wheel to a 165R15 to get a less tail-heavy. At the same time I replaced the front shock absorbers to adjustable AVOs. After this conversion the chassis has never touched ground any more. My car is for road use only, and I am unable to feel any difference with regard to road holding. The speedometer now is exact.

I was able to reuse the 195/60 tyres on our Citroen.

Oh no Ken, I just made a mistake when I ordered- a senior moment! Still, as I said, there have been no problems. Meabh.
