I spent part of this afternoon with a lovely new client. A guy in his 80s that has dedicated his whole life to mosquitos. He has documented and blueprinted every part. Accumulated many thousands items of parts. He built the mould that has produced the 2 flying mozzies built in NZ. The one currently being fitted out and the bomber version half laid up in the mould as well as his own plane which is half finished. That’s 5 from his mould. The detail and complexity is amazing. He has realised he can never finish his own one and is sellling it (for a cool $5m) so it can be finished and flying before he dies. He proudly showed me the magazine racks he had just restored for a customer worth $57k. He lives in a small sleepout next to the huge workshop full of mosquitos, patterns and parts. Awesome guy I just want to soend more and more time with

Brilliant, does he have a web site or contact details among his time spent whittling balsa ? If he is not already in touch with Tony Agar (of HJ711) it would be well worth putting them together for a virtual beer.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

Back in the 60s he had a one month flying course at Exeter (he was in the ATC). With a choice of two aircraft to fly he chose the Chipmonk as it had more instruments.
Across the airfield were several Mosquitos, used for towing targets and for radar tracking.
The pilots of these would quite often take a trainee with them for experience. As the pilots quite often became bored they would hand over control to the trainee (the aircraft were all trainers so had dual controls). Anyhow, on one of these flights over the Scilly Isles (at around 9000 ft) my friend noticed orange spurts from Navy vessels below, then the puffs of smoke some 50 yards from the aircraft. When he said to the pilot "they're shooting at us" the pilot replied that if they were really shooting at the plane they would have been hit. There were a couple of other tales too.
My pal did say that TW117 was in a museum in Norway and he really out to visit, taking his logbook, and ask if he could be reacquainted the cockpit again.

Thanks for that contribution Graham most interesting thumbs.

I doubt he has a website but anyone into restoring mosquitos probably has his number. Here’s s google search that uncovers heaps of articles and pictures.

Philip,

there were some videos of the flights of a couple of his "New" Mosquitos on YouTube, this LINK is one. It will take you to many others....

I read somewhere that to build a new D.H. Mosquito first you have to build a concrete former over which a half of the fuselage is built. Then you build the second half, fit all the electrical and other stuff inside and join the two halves together..just like a plastic kit!

For those into the revival of planes from that era I have also come across a Tempest project.

https://hawkertyphoon.com/

It is sad that the Mosquito and Typhoon cannot be funded by the BBMF.
