Went out for a blast in newly my inherited +8 last evening and noticed that when I put the lights on that the switchgear wasn't illuminated. I’ve never driven at night in the car before so my question is: should the switchgear light up and if so where is the bulb and how do I change it (presuming this is the problem).

Any advice appreciated before I start crawling around in the footwells!

Regards Jason

Hehe,

Switches weren't illuminated on 'ordinary' cars back then... Perhaps some of the very expensive sports and limos had it, but not the run of the mill motor.

I find the modern illuminated interior of a car slightly distracting, but apart from work runs, I very rarely drive at night any more.

Cheers,

Those were the days eh Graham. I remember passing my test & driving my sisters long shift mini with sliding windows and a what 2 what lamp behind the speedo.

We had a long shift Countryman with a Hopkirk gearstick extension............
And switch extensions on the two switches.........
Wipers and lights was it?
And the little green flashing end on the indicator stalk.......
It was a great car.

Nice to know my concern on wiring integrity is unfounded!

My eight year old son is astonished to learn the instrument switches are not meant to be illuminated on pre 77 Mogs. He quite practically suggested sticking various material to each switch so it can be identified when driving at night; feathers, glazier cherries, sandpaper and the like spring to mind. Would be a nice way to go that extra mile when personalising one's Morgan.

Not so sure about the glace cherries Jason - you'll come back to a swarm of wasps, or a cockpit full of bird whatsit!

2 Watt lamps behind the instruments? Think I've still got them in RTA! And, probably would have in the 90 had I not fitted LEDs grin2 As for the German machine, I've never driven it in the dark (yet) so I'm not sure I'll be able to use it when the nights close in... Or what the dash looks like in the dark - it's confusing enough in daylight!

Cheers,
