Well early this morning there is a "Stan" on the phone telling me I am part of the telephone preference group. With that I left her to it whilst I made a cup of tea... I went back to the phone 10 minutes later and she had gone.

They have dropped the it's Open reach here and how many lights are showing on your router after many years - don't you get tired of them.

Richard, our landline is with Virgin but I bought a BT phone set (4 phones) which includes call blocking, it’s fantastic and has eliminated almost all of the cold calling. If the callers number is in your approved numbers list they get straight through, if it’s an unrecognised number they have to announce themselves and you can accept or block the call and number. Most of the cold calls are through automatic dialling systems so there’s not a human to announce themselves so it doesn’t ring. You can see the call history including numbers that didn’t get as far as ringing, it illustrates just how many of those calls have tried to interrupt you!

It's got so bad with us, that we simply don't answer the land line any more. Anyone who knows us knows to call our mobiles. We check the voice mail every couple of days just in case. The b*gg*rs call from international numbers so the TPS doesn't stop them

Occasionally I'll pick up and have a bit of fun with them, I try to keep them on line as long as I can by pretending to be a bit thick and getting them to explain everything 3 or 4 times. A real success is when I get them to lose their temper and start swearing at me.

When I moved 2 1/2 years ago I didn't plug the phone into the existing landline and didn't give anyone the number.

I now don't have the landline.

& religiously mark as spam any such calls on my mobile - I still get calls from the contact details sold on by my son's car insurer while he was learning to drive - 5 years on.

Very tired of them , but I think it is incumbent upon us folk who have the mental capacity to deal with such calls to keep them occupied for as long as possible , so they we divert them away from those who don't.

I get a bizarre pleasure in thinking up strategies to keep them talking, wasting their time, and generally making them wish they didn't have such a job.

When I do answer the land line and find it's a cold caller, I politely advise the caller that I am recording the call for the purpose of pursuing a harassment case against them, do they want to continue with the call? the line usually goes dead straight away, funnily enough I have not had any cold calls now for quite a few months!

Can anyone recall ( no pun ) a few years ago someone set the idiot up who phoned by telling him " don't put the phone down you are witness to a murder" went through the lot and shook the hell out of him . Wish I had thought it up could have made a fortune selling loo rolls . grin2

Jack we have that & if you want you can switch it off on your internet account page. We love it but the only downside is if people who haven't been approved before call and you are out. In that case the answer phone won't work.

Depending on mood I sometimes have a bit of fun - especially if it`s the accident people. I tell them how Jill &I tripped down a slope and all A&E did was wrap my head in vinegar & brown paper or how I fell off a wall and a group of mounted soldiers came past and just left me there saying that they could not help etc.
I once persuaded one chap that he needed to switch energy suppliers, get double glazing and insulate his home following which he should invest in a new boiler!- I then thanked him for his time and hung up.

We get these calls from India two or three times a day.
Of late they seem to have a way to spoof seemingly real, but un-used UK phone numbers, I'm not sure how.

I have a couple of strategies which i use to waste time, depending on my mood.

Q: Is that Mr Jenks?
A: No, I'm sorry, he passed away. I'm his son, clearing up the house.

I speak enough German to be able to reply in German, which really confuses them...

Q: Is that Mr Jenks?
A: Vielleicht, was willst du?
Q: I'd like to ask Mr Jenks a few Questions
A: Was, bist du die Polizei?
Q: Can you speak English?
A: Ja, aber ich möchte heute kein Englisch sprechen.

Or I just put the phone next to the radio!

Exactly. You have to be well down on your luck and be desperate to take a job like that, so I cant bring myself to be rude to them. There by the grace of god ....

And as for the phones systems that want you to identify yourself so the recipient can decide whether or not to take the call - occasionally I have somebody to call and come across this system. I refuse to comply. Its rude. So I put the phone down and the call goes unmade.

Has anyone found a way of dealing with unwanted mobile calls and texts?

You can block all calls and texts that aren't contacts in your address book... alternatively you can block any (future) calls that have been received.

cold-calling double-glazing slaespeople may be, but the 'You have a problem with Windows' scumbags are just criminals, confidence tricksters aiming to exploit people's ignorance for gain. I'm sorry, but there's no excuse to resort to criminal activity just because you can't get an honest job.

Peter the dawn of Internet Telephony have made the presentation of local numbers easy sadly. There are large network carriers which offer telephony break out from the Internet in 100's of countries with local numbers you can choose from. It makes it harder to spot them. They offer cheaper rates allowing more spam calls as well.

One step forward, two steps backwards.

Talk Talk are very good about helping out with unwanted calls. I have a number to key in which forever bars that number, they also have something like the BT Call Gard however, it's ironic that most of my unwanted callers say they are from Talk Talk. I usually ask them what my acct. number is or better still I sound all excited saying I really would like to speak to them but could they hang on whilst I turn the kettle off. I then put the 'phone next to the radio and let them try their hand at Pop Master.
I expect they score more than I do !! oldgit
