This is the deal.

It must be a weekday.

The LAF is bigger than the LDC.

So if you would like a TM posse trip, we need to first decide when...

We have two Heritage exhibitions here in
> Derby: one located in our Learning & Career Development Centre (LCDC),
> Wilmore Road. This is an overview of the Rolls-Royce story from its
> beginnings to present day product range.
>
> We also have a more
> extensive collection at our Light Alloy Foundry (LAF) site on Osmaston
> Road, where you can see the largest collection of aero engines in the
> country, ranging from World War 1 era piston engines, the famous
> Merlin, right up to modern day jet engines. The collection also
> includes examples across Rolls-Royce's product range including marine
> and industrial applications. There are a small number of vintage
> cars, some of which hark back to the early days of Rolls-Royce and the
> start of the motor car era. There are also examples of engines and
> motor cars from distinguished names such as Armstrong Siddeley and
> Napier, whose companies became part of the Rolls-Royce group in their
> later years.
>
> Our exhibitions are
> available to view between 9.15 to 3.15 Monday to Thursday and between
> 09.15 and 12.30 on Friday. All our visits are by prior appointment
> only. Normally the LCDC Exhibition tour takes about 1 hour, the LAF
> Exhibition tour takes about 1¾ hours. You can tour either
> exhibition, or both, but bear in mind the two sites are approximately
> 2 miles apart.
>
> A guide will take you
> round the exhibitions. There is no charge to visit the exhibitions or
> for the guide. We would require at least 2 weeks’ notice. (We can
> accommodate a group up to 30, but we would need at least a month’s
> notice).
> We ask that sensible shoes are worn whilst visiting the exhibitions
> (no high heels or open toe shoes). It is possible for visitors to
> take photographs (for their own personal use) within the exhibition
> areas. Both the exhibitions have wheelchair access.
>
> Please note that we do not
> have any lunch facilities for visitors at the LAF site – this would
> need to be organised by yourselves.
> However, you would be able to buy refreshments at the LCDC site.
>
> Cancellation Policy - if
> due to unforeseen circumstances, eg. bad weather or other, we have the
> right to cancel your visit, and we will of course endeavour to notify
> you as soon as possible.

Dave,
sounds good. I am pretty flexible date wise.
Why don't you suggest a day & we can comment.
W/o 19 Aug would be good for me.

Excellent Dave.

Count me in. Both or either location, both would be best I think. Make a full day of it and come up the night before.

Depending on the final dates, I would very much like to see these Heritage Exhibitions.

Post the date and I'll confirm.

Fridays are early closing so not the best day.

Any preferences otherwise?

A Monday will allow distance travel on Sunday if that helps?

Pushing your luck doing that on Friday the 13th !!

What a great job to get but I bet it can get a bit stressful at times.

I particularly like the 3rd photograph showing the wing centre section and how the engine nacelles are incorporated.

It also shows the fairly thick, flattish bottom aerofoil section which is good for low speed lift.

OK, this is the plan...................

I've sent the application in for MONDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER at 10.00HRS

Having discussed with SiL, the Learning & Career Development Centre (LCDC), at Wilmore Road is the Corporate training hub, and the small display here is pretty much repeated in the larger display at LAF - Light Alloy Foundry.

Car parking at LCDC can be tricky if there are visitors or training on site, and on that basis I don't think it's worth adding this site on this time. We don't want to turn up there and not be able to park.

The LAF site has a large car park behind security gates, and an extensive display which will take almost two hours to go round.

I did also think about something else. For those who are travelling a long way, from this site on Osmaston Road, it isn't too far to the Donington Collection, which also has a cafe. Just a suggestion for lunch and p.m.......

So I'll kick off a list of names. Just copy and add your name to keep a single complete list.
I estimated 15-20 people.............

1. DaveW
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Sorry Dave - that’s me out - we will be on holiday - Isles of Scilly.
Hope the trip goes well. The collection at Osmaston Road is wonderful.

The Cafe at the Donington Collection is quite good. Better is the Nags Head in Castle Donington.

A driving licence is a good idea, but it's not MOD there, just secure commercial.

Yes we're all go........hoping to get there by 9.45. Traffic may be slow and there are roadworks on the A52 east of Derby.

I'll be hitching a ride in a BMW X3.........after staying over with MissW.

Very informative visit, thanks for organising Dave.

I was so enthralled by what our guide was telling us that I forgot to take any pictures.

There are no computer visuals or the like at this Heritage Centre, only loads of engine history all the way from the very beginnings of the aviation industry to the very latest Turbofans from the A380 and Dreamliner. Plus a lot of the Military Jet range including the parts RR do for the F35.

And when you have a guide as knowledgable as ours you don't need the side shows to explain it all. Just listen and ask questions.

I just wish I had the sort of memory that can absorb all the facts and figures.

Really enjoyed it and Thanks again to Dave

Here's the initial view as we entered the first building. This was originally built as a tram depot, in the 19th Century. It's due to be demolished, sadly, and built on. The exhibits will be moved to the other site at Sinfin.

The twin prop is a Griffon (I think!) from a Shackleton. Early engines down the right hand side are from various other manufacturers.

This is looking over to the left, ... and half our group. Extreme left is the Merlin with a small blade prop which is started on open days.

Here's a Junkers Jumo engine from the Ju87 and Ju88. Note the inverted Vee. Crankshaft at the top.

One of the Merlins........

A general view. Left centre is a pre-Merlin (forgotten which model) - which was dug out of the ground. Note the badly damaged prop.

A Wright radial. A real work of art.

This one is I think, a Griffon.........

Canberra Bomber nose section. You are allowed to climb inside. Three of us did!!!! The pilot seat is very claustrophobic, completely surrounded by instruments and all black. Visibility forward is poor. The navigator and bomb aimer sit side by side behind the pilot, in a space no bigger than a Morgan cockpit, but way more claustrophobic. I'm quite small but this was much smaller inside than I expected!!!

More to follow........... grin2

Dave, on behalf of Tim, Peter, myself (the SwanMog lot) & Martin thanks for a fascinating visit. Have to agree with Stuart about the lack of drink facility though.

It's a shame that RR dont make more of their collection, it's almost of national importance.

Must mention the brilliant guides, they made the day.

I think that the history contained within those buildings is of National importance. The photograph of Mitchell and Royce together just before they died deserves a better place than on a corridor wall, and I wish I'd taken a photo of that photo...........

We found a Starbucks on the A38 and spent a Kings ransom on coffee.

Absolutely agree Dave, I wonder if your SiL could get a copy of the Photo for us.

I stood and stared at it a bit on the way out.

Without their vision we would not have had the Spitfire or the Merlin Engine but they never got to see them used in anger.

I remember one of the final scenes from the film "First of the Few" where David Niven, I think playing Squadron Leader Geoffrey Crisp, having been in a dog fight looks up to the sky and exclaims something along the lines of "they can't take the Spitfire Mitch" Lump in throat time.

What would have happened to the Hurricane, Mosquito, Lancaster etc. Or indeed the Mustang without the Merlin?

I'll ask SiL if he can get a pic of it Bob. Those two men were fundamental to the outcome of the war in the air, and that photo is remarkable!!

Thanks Stewart.

There's something haunting about that picture when I think "What If"

That looks like a caption competition waiting to happen.

I will start "you're going to lose"

Thanks Stewart. I hoped somebody had bothered.........

Actually that's my caption.
Royce says to Mitchell "I hoped somebody had bothered".

Had it not been for Rolls, who was a rich kid early flyer, Royce may not have gone into aviation, so Rolls was equally influential. There must have been a film made about Rolls and Royce but a new drama documentary would be amazing.

The company keep a Spitfire PRXIX locally to impress VIP guests.

Thanks for a great set of pictures Dave, we heard and saw lots of Merlin's airborne at Revival and it's the one event of the year I won't ever miss having had 10 consecutive years of joy from them.

You boys and girls must have had a good visit.
