Imber is the village that the Army took over in 1943 and never gave back.
Every summer it is opened to the public for a few days.
This summer it is Saturday 18th to Monday 27th August inclusive.

Access is from Warminster or the A360

I plan on going on August 22 or 23rd. A line up of Morgan Cars on the main street would be cool....

Anyone interested?

Let's start a list, with preferred date.

Peter & Caroline 22 or 23 August.

Have tours on 22nd, but could possibly do 23rd (unless someone drops out).

I've made contact with Landmarc ltd, who manage the ranges for the MOD, to see if we can get a guided tour of the village, normally off limits.
I've also had contact from one of the Mog centres who would like to join us.

More as this develops!

As Graham is the only one not available on the 22nd, we will settle on

23rd August 2018

The Swanmoggers are likely to join us and I'll also invite LogMog.

We are still waiting on a response from Landmarc over access to the village buildings, "behind the wire".

I guess you are coming down the M4 so perhaps Marlborough would be close to make the morning leg more relaxing.

The Inn with the Well
http://www.theinnwiththewell.co.uk/
Marlborough Road, Ogbourne St George, Marlborough SN8 1SQ
01482 947714

Some friends stayed there last year and said it was a good pub/inn.

Any help?

It is excellent...
For those travelling from the Sough and West this place is well regarded...
http://www.thedove.co.uk/

Provisional plan is to meet there at noon for lunch and then go to Imber for 2:30pm.

Well Landmarc has checked with DIO and because of the dry weather and several fires on the ranges, no activity is allowed outside the permitted paths. So we can walk along the main street and into the church and church yard.

I propose meeting up at the Rose and Crown in Tilshead, on the A360 a few miles from Imber, for lunch and then set off from there at 14:30. The pub is about 5.5 miles from Imber Village.

I've been up there a few times, some interesting info in the church, be good to meet a few people. Devizes is quite local (and generally cheaper than Marlborough) for anybody staying the night.

Slight risk of the odd shower this morning, but the afternoon will be bright.

Following the wet drive back from Prescott Tarka has been washed, properly polished (first time this year!) and will have 4 new Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres fitted!

It should be a good afternoon!

What a great day out...!!

Thanks to everyone for joining in a what is an unique experience. Descending from Gore Cross on the A360 is like going back in time... the village has no postcode, there is no mobile phone signal, no electricity, no noise.... well other than 18 or so Morgans!

We met up at the Rose and Crown in Tiltshead, a few miles away. Somehow a traditional car and traditional Morgans look so good together!

After lunch we drove to the village and all lined up along the High Street, Aero cars at one end, the rest in a row into the distance. A couple of good photos below showing the cars in front of the re-built village houses: very different from the original village, they are used for house to house combat training.

The MOD are a bit paranoid about visitor safety, as this sign over a certain yellow +4 shows.....!

We walked up to the church, which is much as it was in 1942: lots of posters and information and people selling books, articles and honey. the honey is special, the bees are in hives on Salisbury Plain and forage the wild flowers that grow across the training area. As the farm land was last used in the 1940s pesticides and fertilisers have never been used.

More about the village, here: www.imberchurch.org.uk.

Great day out. Thanks for the invite Peter smile
Same weather next year? sunny please!
Good to put some additional faces to names and get Jays wheel moved on towards its new home - thanks Stuart.

Lost Lyle on the way north, somewhere on the Chippenham ring road. Only took 2 hours to return home - one of my favourite roads from Cirencester to CM (A435) was shut sadly. But, great to explore some new villages / lanes / roads getting to Tilshead.

Yes thanks to Peter and all for organising it. My apologies for halting the convoy on the ride in, I was not quite prepared for that one when I found myself in the lead and no idea as normal!

It was nice to see all the cars. I had forgotten how nice the Rover V8 burble was.

Peter

Fabulous day out.

Thanks for organising it and more specifically knowing how to get us safely there without encountering any stray munitions!

One of the best moments was when Malcolm was following me down the road to Imber. It is the first time I have ever seen a Max/Coupe/S4/S5 in my mirror. It was quite amazing to see what other drivers see when one of our cars comes up behind them. So small low and wide looking.

There is a series on Channel 5 that includes an episode on Imber.

Portillo's Hidden History of Britain.Series 1 Episode 4
A few of them have been quite enlightening.

It should be on My5.tv for those in the UK (I am afraid I suspect it will be geo limited for those not using TOR or other naughty tools.
