As a some of those who took part in the Grindelwald trip know, I am planning a trip to New Zealand with my 3-wheeler. One or two expressed some interest in possibly sharing a container with me. I am probably looking at arriving in New Zealand in March next year.

Anyone still interested?

How much food will you need for the journey?

Hi

Sounds great, we would love to welcome you to the antipodes!
Please ensure that you keep us up to date with your plans as we offer a friendly face in Auckland.
There are possibly a dozen three wheelers here spread around the country
The Mog club can also offer support.

The wife and I should be retired for the second time by then!

Cheers

Bank of Mum & Dad is depleted just now, but how I would relish that trip. Took a camper from top to bottom of both islands a few years back. You will enjoy it for certain.

Hi Ric, I’m probably going to be touring North Island in Feb, March with Daughter and Granddaughter. Seeing my cousin in Auckland first, and then probably hiring a campervan to get around. Itinerary is still to be worked out. The next few weeks should have things sorted. It would be good to try and meet up somewhere with yourself and maybe some other 3 Wheeler drivers if we can work things out.

I've been threatening to return to NZ for years, preferably over the christmas period so that I don't get too depressed by the over the top nonsense we have to put up with in this country. It would be even better to take my +4, instead of buying a small RV over there.

You don't want to bring your container forward do you Ric?

Hi,
NZ trip sounds great. I never thought of taking my 4/4 away like this but interestingly I’d like to do both USA and NZ this way. Roughly what cost to ship by container?

Have a great trip

Thank your wife please Philip. Very thoughtful. I used to be medium, but latterly I have found the necessity to go for a large size for some reason.

Southampton to USA New York is circa £6k return for two cars in a 40 foot container. So £3k each. It's cheaper by RORO but your car can only travel with the spare and toolkit. Friends have had problems (theft) in the past with RORO. Don't forget you will need marine insurance as well. Circa 0.5% car's value.

A few people have been asking about our New Zealand Plans. I have added the planned route to my blog for anyone interested:

https://rh03mog.com/2019-new-zealand/

The cars start their long journey to New Zealand on 13th December - that has come round quickly!

I’m looking forward to starting our trip on March 8th.

Again, the forum has been a great help with planning and finding insurance.

The container carrying our cars is on this ship which has just arrived in the Port of Tauranga New Zealand. 6 weeks wait now until we are with them in Auckland.

Tauranga was a lovely town when we visited a few years ago, when my son and his girlfriend (now wife) were working there. The hill on the right looks like Mount Maunganui, a local highspot and worth the hard walk up it.

I will be following your adventures with great interest, it is a route I would like to do myself in a year or two, sadly this year would not have worked for me.

Have a great time, I know you will.

Nigel if the containers are offloaded at Tauranga (likely) they will be rail freighted to Auckland metro port (penrose) to be processed.

Yes the container is being offloaded from the Spirit of Hamburg and is being taken by rail to Auckland Metroport.

Hi Shaun et al
Whilst you are loitering tomorrow, keep an eye out for white Skoda Yeti
Hopefully will be on time(ish) as it will be rush hour.

Ricardo, did you get to speak to Phillip Hart in Whitianga?

The weather has come right after a couple of heavy days. It was needed though as has been a very dry few months.

Cheers

We picked the cars up today, thanks to Nigel P964 for the lift, they all started easily then a little drive out with one of their New Zealand cousins. The tour starts in earnest tomorrow

Good shakedown jaunt to the black sands beach of Piha on the west coast.
So cars have already completed NZ coast to coast crossing!
Not bad for day zero

Good to see day 1 has gone well guys and doll.
Looks like Shaun will be stopping for petrol twice as often as the others with that air brake on the back!

Happy travels

We are still on for Sat in Orewa

Started at dawn today 270 miles of twisty roads to Cape Reinga, the Northern most point, and back. One section of road can be.best described as having banked hairpins it was a great roller coaster drive.

Thank you all for posting your reports here and on Richard Hardy's blog site. The roads north of Auckland are new to me and it looks like a wonderful start to your odyssey.

The baggage pile on the back of MY13 seems to be shrinking...

Yes teifistar, you are right about Omapere, I hope you travellers are taking the opportunity to swim occasionally as you come back down the east coast, what day coming through Auckland again?

Guys, you’re beginning to catch us up now - you will definitely like the twisty roads around the Coromandel Peninsula. A straight bit of road is a rare thing! See you all soon 😎

Good morning Roger et al
As Ricardo say's you will have some arm work around the Coromandel, make up for the boring traffic through Auckland. Still on for coffee at Nourish at Te Puna? Spoke to Nigel a couple of days ago and he was looking forward to meeting up.
If you Text me as you pass through Katikati ( The mural town ) on 0274366256. Katikati is about 20min from Te Puna.
Enjoy the drive.

Well Captain Cook went there and observed the transit of Mercury, but those cars together is possibly a rarer sight, a pity Lyle the well known Aussie Morgan traveller could not have been there too.

Just meet the team at Te Puna, just outside Tauranga. They had a great breakfast, left Whangamata at about 8am with no breakfast. Took them up to a lookout at Minden but a lot of mist about so not quite the view it could be. Guided them to the Tauranga Direct road and sent them on the way to Rotorua. No doubt there will be pictures coming.
Great meeting them.

Well the arms will have a bit of a rest before the sea crossing. After that will be a bit of a workout then a bit easier before reaching Nelson.

There seem to be quite a few car/bike groups touring South Island we stopped and chatted to a group on Indians saw couple of 1930’s Fords and were told of a French group of about 30 Citroen’s

The owner of this Austin A30 van stopped to chat, he tows his speedway bike on a trailer behind. Being Sunday there were lots of classics on the road we must have a hundred or so mainly 50’s, 60’s and 70’s British and American cars.

And then over Arthur’s Pass back towards the west coast

No prizes for guessing what was parked here last night

The forecast rain had just started as we left this morning, the forecast was for 200 to 300mm of rain, and it just got heavier during the drive. We all arrived soaked to the skin despite waterproof jackets and overalls. Forecast for more of the same tomorrow before returning to the sunshine we have had the last couple of weeks.
The rain we had in Grindelwald a couple of years ago was mere drizzle compared with what we had today.

Of course the length of NZ means that while the team have some dicey weather down there this week, in Auckland we are still hot and sunny.🌞

But at least it hasn't snowed (yet?).

Hopefully by the time you see this the rain will have gone and you'll be back to sunshine for the rest of the trip.

It all looks absolutely fantastic cheers

Well the rain hammered down all night, we woke to the news that the road we travelled yesterday was closed due to flooding and land slips, and that was the main road down the west coast. In view of the forecast for the day of continuous heavy rain clearing tomorrow we are staying put in Fox Glacier today.

Turns out it was a good call, the road is now closed in both directions out of here at least until tomorrow morning.

Pleased to hear that the three threes are staying put the weather looks pretty atrocious at least till tomorrow morning, I found years ago that English motorcycling wet weather gear just didn't cut it in NZ rain so reverted to yachting gear to stay dry.

Back on the road today, the bridge we crossed on the way into Fox Glacier which crossed a virtually dry river bed was taken out by a raging torrent 20 hours later. Rain at is peak was falling at 100mm an hour . The bridge took with it all communication with the outside world as well.

Thankfully you made it to Fox Glacier when you did otherwise your trip would be majorly disrupted. Weather looks good for the next few days but watch out for Monday.

ps here is the best weather forecast for NZ http://metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nz&noofdays=10

Those guys are having it rough out in NZ on South Island. Shaun e-mailed last evening to say they were now able to get out of town after being cut off for three days. Then a couple of hours ago sent me this picture of a bridge they had driven over going into Fox Glacier that was washed away in the storm so cutting all communications off as well as passage.
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-47703741/new-zealand-bridge-washed-away-in-heavy-storm
The next few days look better for them though, Take Care, Ian

We can’t complain apart from the last 3 days the weather has been fantastic. The bridge took with it all communications, we were down to a message board with road status, there was some tech behind it as the local glacier guides had satellite phones and were updating everyone, luckily we were heading south those going north had a 1000 km
Shaun and Libby went for petrol when there was a brief lull in the rain

Today we made a pre dawn start managing 300 miles to gain back one of the days we had lost the views continue to be stunning

Another long day planned tomorrow and we will be back on our schedule

Another dawn start today, but worth it with views like this

We have crammed 4 days driving into the last 2 days and are now back on schedule after the storm delay a few days ago.

Friday night and we are in Invercargill where it seems to be cruise night

Great going team, must have been a quick visit to Milford Sounds, certainly would have beaten all the tourist buses. Probably saw a few as you were on the Milford Sounds to Te Anau road on the way out. Weather seems a bit more settled for your trip north.
Safe travels.

Guys

As you are in Invercargill my friend John Merton from Oz very strongly recommends the following :

"If you can get a message to them quickly, although they may already becaware.
The Bill Richardson truck collection there is simply the very best motor museum in the world"

Hope you make it , it sounds superb.

The people in S Island must think it a bit like busses. Don't see any, and then 4 turn up.

Yes 3144 miles each completed by all 3 M3W’s and the only problem a broken tonneau zip,
Two of the cars were 2013 and one 2017, cars now at the shippers ready to their return back to the UK

New Zealand is great place to visit, the trip was memorable for so many reasons. It is impossible to pick one highlight it was all stunning. The scenery is continually changing and spectacular. The weather was perfect apart from the one day when we got very wet driving into Fox Glacier and the subsequent 2 days when it was torrential but the roads were closed so we couldn’t drive anywhere

A big thank you to all the New Zealand Morgan owners both 3 and 4 wheelers, who we met along the way who helped with collecting and delivering the cars, from the shippers, who drove with us and gave general moral support .
