The Ash Splinters had an impromptu meeting today at Newark. (which is an anagram of W****r).

The weather was too good to miss, and there won't be many days like today in the remaining part of 2018.

So I, SBM and Kev made the trip, and what a fantastic venue!!!! We must return at some point. A huge shop with books, kits, badges and so on, and over 70 aircraft, mostly post WW2. Wow what a great day out........

Unfortunately my camera battery was almost flat, so not many photos...........
We had bacon butties and tea/coffee at the start, and cake with tea/coffee before we left, and we talked constantly. I soon realised that I know more about this stuff than the two of them combined............ grin2

Yes indeed, a truly excellent day..!! The weather added to it all, too. Fantastic autumn weather for Morganeering, and someone that knows everything along too.. I never realised you worked for Airfix, Dave..

But yes, another trip would be very worthwhile.

We were parking up and saw this guy on his motorbike just locking up. He wore a hoodie over his leathers with a very clear message, so we started to chat & before you know it, he was getting hugged by Kev..!

Of course, with Dave W, the internationally renowned and famous author, being there, Kev and I thought we'd just have a sneaky once over whilst Dave's back was turned..

Hmmm..

I'm pleased to say it all passed muster, so we trekked off into the well stocked shop to harass the lovely ladies behind the counter. We suggested Dave should treat himself to a new pair of matching red overalls, complete with Red Arrows badging, but they didn't quite have his size.

There was this mammoth beast on site too. Apparently a carrier borne aircraft, the twin contra rotating propellers shared a common gearbox. Now THAT takes some working out..! Have to say I marvel at just how clever the people were that engineered these devices, and without the help of CAD models and computer programs to speed things up. Astounding.

Kev was window shopping for a Saab, but the Viggen wouldn't accept throttle bodies apparently..

A cracking day out, chaps. Thank you.

Final chuckle is Dave's signing of Kev's copy of "The Book"..

thumbs

Aha, one of those "flying rivets in loose formation" in photo 3 smile
I've sat in that Vulcan.
A group of NBC'ers paid a visit a few years ago AndyG (MOG615) being one of the main instigators.
Didn't spend enough time there, but our conducted tour was very good (lasting considerably longer than normal apparently!).
Must get back there soon.
(WX forecast for next couple of days looks good smile ).

Take the first photo of a plane (Avro Shakleton) which has four of the same engine/dual prop assemblies as seen on the Fairy Gannet further down.

A friend of mine who went into the RAF got the Shakletons on his first posting. He commented it was unusual to take off and have four engines running for a full flight due to the complexity. How the bloke in the Gannet felt about that must have been interesting.

Just time to burn a little more petrol before dinner.

Looks fun. Will try to get over there sometime.
We did Yeovilton as part of the SwanMog Somerset event earlier this month. I hadn't been there for I guess nearly 50 years & boy had it changed.

The day we were there...with Graham etc.... we were told to wait outside for a short while, as the Vulcan based at a nearby aerodrome had just taken off, it flew low overhead, and dipped its wings as it flew over the Vulcan on display. Amazing sound and sight.

Newark Air Museum is indeed a fascinating place to visit. We went last year and were lucky enough to be able to climb inside the Vulcan cockpit. An amazing experience.
