With today's technology, I think you are right, but things are changing incredibly fast - look at the state of driverless technology 10 or even only 5 years ago.

I was very struck by the 2 pictures of New York. An amazing level of change, and that was a century ago.

The New York images were not driven by legislation rather the transition was driven by capitalism and freedom of choice, the very things that have in some eyes caused the issues transportation is now facing.

Autonomous vehicles will need to solve the problem of being unhackable the very networked nature of them leave them open to abuse. Let alone the massive infrastructure needed to keep them working safely, millions of robots that could easily be viewed suspiciously over whether they safer than current cars. Sci-fi scenarios you may think but from a litigation point of view, miss selling of ppi never killed anyone!

The only sad thing is I could currently do with cheap autonomous transport as I can't drive, and public transport will take me 3 1/2 hours instead of 20 minutes to get to work! drive

You can see why they would dump horses in favour of an automobile.

But dumping a car for driverless taxis?

Lets not kid ourselves about the cost either. Big companies with semi monopolies will bleed the customer as much as they can.

We would be happy with a decent bus service. The Memsahib has a dentist appointment at 17.50 and the last bus leaves the City at 18.10, I hope the dentist has a very fast drill!!!

Oh cool taxi fairs will be a tenth of what they are now and you'll no longer need to own your own car, everything is solved!

Love the optimism, but dreamers are rarely the people to implement services.

Its the BBC - London based train using left leaning middle class intellectuals. Not really on the same planet

If this happens in my village during my lifetime I'll use one - that's how sure I am it won't happen.
In cities and Motorways it has a chance probably.

The real creative thinking will be working out how these systems co exist during the overlap introduction period it will be a very interesting time.

Probably require groundwave based add-on nav systems too.
Decca navigator anyone?
You could be re-installing transmitters Richard! grin2

Now that would be ironic Graham - I guess Loran is still around but not very accurate we always said it was close enough for Government work...
Differential GPS stations could provide the information I would think, they inherited some of our old Tx sites and I believe they were LF.

Not sure Richard, but "probably" is the answer.
