Not yet purchased my first Morgan, but hoping to in the next few months.

Have a bit of family history with Morgans, Dad had an F type, and a +4, and my Grandad worked at Morgans from 1966 to 1975 - he will have built your ash wheel arches! smile

Looking out for an unrestored 4 seat 4/4 (my budget is a little limited) that was built by him.

Cheers

Phil

Welcome Phil a good bit of Morgan history and a great reason for getting a Morgan, I wish you luck and success with the search. Many people have found their way into ownership your way.

Good luck with the search. You are probably looking for a Ford 1500cc for the earlier years or a 1600 "Crossflow" engined car for later years. Both are nice cars, but finding an unrestored one may take a while . Most of that age will have had at least one rebuild.

Cheers.

My main priority is an unrestored frame - even if I have to replace it shortly afterwards I'd like to keep a bit of his work smile

I'm fairly adept at maintenance, used to have a brace of 60's Land Rovers, and currently have 8 motorbikes in various states of (dis)repair!

Got one smile

1972 4/4 - has had a partial resto, but from what I could see from all the paperwork at Allon White, the woodwork is still original. Still, even if it isn't, it's still from the factory when my Grandad was there.

Pick up a week on Saturday.....

My Morgan

Thank you - the price was VERY attractive (especially with full dealer back up) and I thought better to buy with an approaching winter, than in the spring when 'open tops' become more desirable smile

Excellent.
When you check the wiring, you may find a heavy brown wire leading from the starter relay on the nearside bulkhead that disappears behind the dash and reappears on the offside at the fuse box. The fusebox (if original) will only have 3 or 4 fuses fitted. Check the brown wire near the starter relay has a circuit breaker or fusible link fitted. If not, fit one soonest. You might find a photo or two on here of the modifications I did to my '76 wiring in that area.

Most of all, have fun with the car. 4 seater X-flow prices have risen quite dramatically since I thought about looking a few years ago. smile

Congratulations that you have got such a personal car!

It is a very emotional thing to drive a car that perhaps is a (little bit) build by your own granddad!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. The next week and a half are going to pass VERY slowly until I pick her up! First trip will to Worcester to take my Dad out for a spin (first time back in a Morgan for him since the early '60's).

The factory have asked me to pop in as well, but might wait until after Christmas for that.

Thank you - I've been round many times with Grandad - he retired in '75 but I used to go with him when he popped back to catch up with all his mates. They were always very keen to show off any 'new' technology or changes that they'd brought in - I was there shortly after they started using the FIAT engine, I can clearly remember the excitement when they purchased their first powdercoater, and I think there was also a change from treating the wooden frames by hand to some form of 'dip' tank smile smile

I think my last trip was about '86, I'd just passed my driving test and drove him over. Be interesting to see how much has changed (or not!) since then.....

You'll see a lot of changes since your last visit then smile
You will need to start in the visitor centre on Spring Lane, to the north side of the factory. Information is on the web site.

Just had a look on Google Earth - wow, a lot has changed. Even the big water tank at the bottom of the hill seems to have gone.

Congratulations on the 4-seater - I had one myself back in the 1980's. Enjoy your visit - I think you will find that much has changed since you were last there!

If you haven't done so already you might like to watch a programme Thames TV made about the Factory back in 1975.

What a fabulous video - Grandad retired on the 10th Sept 1975, so would have been there at the time of the filming. Can't see him, but nice to know he'd have been lurking in the background somewhere.

I was at Allon White today and saw your car. That really does look splendid.

Just one detail - it has a 2009 Anniversary badge fitted. If you leave that on the car, it will disintegrate - well the surface will become very pitted. Not the best quality piece of merchandise sold by MMC.

Also, worth joining the MSCC and then joining their Morgan Historic Register - lots of help and advice from people with cars of a similar age to yours.

Thanks Paul - only a few days left to wait! Will probably remove the badge bar - not a great fan of them. They'll go up on my garage wall with the rest of my 'trophies' smile

Phil, for the moment I can't find the thread where we talked about Dixon Smith. Saw him at lunchtime today and he revealed your Mum? was right - his coupe was a beige colour before it was rebuilt and repainted Royal Ivory.

Cheers,
