For next year's Jungfrau Treffen and Roger has been putting together a superb looking itinerary.

We are looking at leaving a little earlier to allow time to drive down thorough Belgium, Germany, Austria and Switzerland taking in the Stelvio, Gavin and St Gotthard passes on the way.

As has become the norm we've added an extra day to the Jungfrau-Treffen by staying on the Sunday and at the moment have a direct run back to the UK via 1 stop in Troyes.

I'm sure some people would prefer a more leisurely return and we can add this in a bit later.

The headline route is:

Thu 29/8 Calais to Dinant 295km - Ibis hotel
Fri 30/8 Dinant to Trier 194km - Mercure Porta Nigra
Sat 31/8 Trier to Triberg - Hotel Garni Central
Sun 1/9 Triberg to St Anton 261 km - Hotel Montana
Mon 2/9 St Anton to Bormio (via Stelvio pass) 144km - Hotel Rezia
Tue 3/9 Bormio to Lecco (via Gavia pass)143 km - Hotel Pontevecchio
Wed 4/9 Lecco to Grindelwald (via St Gotthard, Susten (or Furka & Grimsel pass) 280 km - Hotel in Gridelwald
Thu 5/9 Grindelwald
Fri 6/9 Grindelwald
Sat 7/9 Grindelwald
Sun 8/9 Grindelwald
Mon 9/9 Grindelwald to Troyes 484km - Hotel Relais St Jean
Tue 10/9 Troyes to Calais 395 km

The event we are travelling to is the Jungfrau Treffen based in Grindelwald which is a 3 Wheeler only event. Usually attended by 30 or so M3W's

Stelvio pass is beautiful !

As far as I know: Its law to wear a helmet in Italy (despite I never used one and so far I was never stopped).

A change of plan for the St Anton stop, we will go for the Alps Hotel which comes recommended and is owned by a Plus 8 owner so he needs to see some proper Morgans smile
https://www.alpslodge.at/en/hotel/the-alpslodge.html

So the updated outbound itinerary is:

Thu 29/8 Calais to Dinant 295km - Ibis hotel
Fri 30/8 Dinant to Trier 194km - Best Western Hotel Trier City
Sat 31/8 Trier to Triberg - Hotel Garni Central
Sun 1/9 Triberg to St Anton 261 km - Alps Hotel
Mon 2/9 St Anton to Bormio (via Stelvio pass) 144km - Hotel Rezia
Tue 3/9 Bormio to Lecco (via Gavia pass)143 km - Hotel Pontevecchio
Wed 4/9 Lecco to Grindelwald (via St Gotthard, Susten (or Furka & Grimsel pass) 280 km - Hotel in Grindelwald

Unless there are any other recommendations let's go firm on the overnight stops so people can start booking the hotels thumbs

Roger is going to start on the detailed route planning and SatNav routes

Just to clarify, for Sun 1st, instead of St Anton the destination is now the Alps Lodge Hotel in Fiss. The weblink is correct.

So the outbound itinerary is:

Thu 29/8 Calais to Dinant 295km - Ibis hotel
Fri 30/8 Dinant to Trier 194km - Best Western Hotel Trier City
Sat 31/8 Trier to Triberg - Hotel Garni Central
Sun 1/9 Triberg to Fiss 291 km - Alps Lodge Hotel
Mon 2/9 Fiss to Bormio (via Stelvio pass) 120km - Hotel Rezia
Tue 3/9 Bormio to Lecco (via Gavia pass)143 km - Hotel Pontevecchio
Wed 4/9 Lecco to Grindelwald (via St Gotthard, Susten (or Furka & Grimsel pass) 280 km - Hotel in Grindelwald

For the scenic return, I know people are wanting to get the hotels booked so unless anyone has further suggestions let's go firm on the planned routing of:

Mon 9/9 Grindelwald to Belfort 222km Grand Hotel
Tue 10/9 Belfort to Troyes 272km Relais St Jean
Wed 11/9 Troyes to Chamouille 172 km Hotel du Golf de l’Ailette
Thu 12/9 Chamouille to Calais 233km

I'm off to book my hotels for the out and scenic return smile

We will firm up on channel crossings, detailed routes, Austria and Swiss motorway vignettes etc later.

cheers

Return journey hotels booked. Last one (Hotel du Golf) was showing as having no available rooms on Booking.com and Expedia but I managed to book direct on the hotel’s website.

Just been checking up on the hotel parking situation for the outbound hotels. No problems for most but worth booking the 10 Euro covered parking at Bormio, or have "street". It's an extra 12 Euros for Trier hotel underground and "limited free parking" at Lecco.

You need to request parking for the Belfort hotel as it is a small car park the other two return hotels have plenty.

FYI, this is reply I got from hotel in Lecco re parking:

Dear Mr Denton
Thank you so much for booking our hotel and for writing to us , we would like to inform you that there is a garage 50 meters away from the hotel , no need to book in advance for it , the cost for the current year is €9 per night , to be settled directly at the garage .
Best regards
Nader

Btw, I will go ahead and set up a WhatsApp group for next year’s trip. Please could those who were not on last year’s trip PM me their mobile number if they would like to join the group.

Ditto re Best Western Hotel Trier City:

Dear Mr Denton,

unfortunaly, our house have no unterground parking, only outside parking it costs 12,-€ a day.
But there is a public garage that is underground near from a hotel. This costs 15.30 a day.

For further information do not hesitate to contact us.

We have decided to do the crossing via the Hull - Zeebrugge ferry route, much more "Up North" friendly. We will meet up with you all at Trier. If anyone else is considering this route I have a voucher code for 15% discount, use before 18th December.

Liking the sound of Hull to Zeebrugge - can you share the code. We would likely meet the group in Dinant as Trier could be a bit of a stretch .

Welcome Nigel & June, great to have you along for the ride drive

I'm sure Ian's pointed you at the MTWC as well and between that and TalkMorgan there are plenty of events to get involved with if you can.

I look forward to meeting you next year.

Merry Christmas all.

So, the trip next year will be our first adventure in the three wheeler over and above a trip to Malvern from North Yorkshire earlier this year. In addition it is our first road trip in something other than a highly reliable German estate car ..
So my first of many questions as a newbie - do any of you have a stock list of stuff I need to start collecting for the trip now , tools, spare parts, sat nav etc etc - any advice welcome

Many thanks

Keith

Most of us carry some spares and usually between us we have enough bits and bobs to cover most road side eventualities. My list of what I carry is probably excessive but you can pick and choose some of the key items:

Cam belt and fitting dowels, tyre pressure gauge and pump, throttle cable, tyre plugs for rear, inner tubes for front plus tyre levers, assorted spanners, screwdrivers, metric and imperial allen keys, socket set, jack, regulator, exhaust clamp, fuel pipe clamps, relays, spark plugs, indicator module, large spanners for rear wheel adjustment, spare bulbs, fuel pump, jumps start pack, cable ties, metal tie wraps, exhaust bobbins, spare bolts for stage 1 silencers, gaffer tape, engine oil.

Most of that fits in a tray I have made located under the bonnet.

Satnav is personal choice some of us use Garmin others TomTom you just need one which you can load pre planned routes onto.

Thanks Rog - that is comprehensive and makes sense. Is the cam belt based upon experience and a previous failure or just super cautious ?.

I don't think the extensive list of spares is really needed if you prepare your M3W before you depart. I may live to regret that statement but the chances are that if you do have a problem then the spares you have will be the wrong ones to fix it at the side of the road. Some things are known problems and can be reduced before departure. Check your cam belt and change it if it looks less than 100%, check the rectifier wires are all good, replace the standard fuel pump with a better item, change the crimped fuel pipe clamps for screw type ones. Other unpredictable problems such as such as punctures have to be catered for. Failing all that, good breakdown and recovery cover is essential and a credit card always helps.

Once you have the M3W reliability sorted you need to consider your packing and luggage, less is definitely better, ask Mark and Hetty....... wink. We find Rohan clothing that packs small and can be washed and dried quickly is ideal. You really don't need as much stuff as you may think, travel light.

On the other hand, travelling heavy is perfectly manageable too! We got six 30 litre bags on the back of our car on this year’s Grindelwald trip.
Merry Christmas, all!🎄🎄🎄

I haven't had to use any of my spares but fellow travellers have used my spare fuel pump, regulator and cam belt in the past.

Chris, missed you yesterday at Bicester Heritage!
Is the plan to meet up at the Eureka Park Premier Inn before heading to Grindelwald?

Hi Shaun,

I've not looked at the times in detail yet but suggest something similar to last year ie. 09:20 Folkestone to Calais and 17:50 Calais to Folkstone.

As first to book you get to pick the times and let us know cheers

Have booked those times for the Eurotunnel (and also booked the Premier Inn).
Paul, will you and Jake be staying the night we get back in the Premier Inn like you did before?

As usual I'm a bit late to this topic, but do plan to join you all this year, probably, but it might clash with another event I need to attend. Will know soon hopefully.....

Hotels booked, I'm outbound Hull to Zebrugge on Thursday 29th so will meet up at Trier on the 30th.

I'm booked into the Sonnenberg in Grindelwald, just up the hill behind the Bernerhoff.

Forgot to say that my trip is all sorted out now too. My clashing event is still too close to allow a normal Monday UK departure with the convoy, so I will leave on a Tunnel on Tues 3rd Sep and stop over in Langres en-route, meeting up in Grindelwald on Weds with you lot. A change of hotel for me this year as I will try the Tschuggen with its parking, just up the road from the K&P etc. I leave Sun 8th for a dash home via Spa to meet up with some friends. Looking forward to it.

And for Heaven's sake and for the sanity of the entire Planet, please, please, please make the poxy sun shine this year eh!!

Here is some further detail on the planned routes to and from Grindelwald.

The Google map links are for info and the times and distances are based on Garmin routes. I’ll add some potential lunch stops into the GPX routes and circulate these nearer the time.

For a few of the days there are alternative routes which we can pick on the day.

As we will be a fairly large group going out we may well split up. Some of the group may prefer an early start to allow getting to the destination in time for some sightseeing, whereas others might prefer a more leisurely departure. We can decide nearer the time how this will work.

Don’t forget to order a Swiss Motorway Vignette (£32.00 and select free postage to UK): https://switzerlandtravelcentre.co.uk/excursion/motorway-vignette-switzerland/

For Triberg to Fiss you will also require an Austria vignette - €9.20 for a 10 day pass from https://shop.asfinag.at/en/

Thursday 29th August, Eurotunnel to Ibis Dinant:

Sunday 1st September, Triberg to Alps Lodge Fiss:

Monday 2nd, Fiss to Rezia Bormio, via Stelvio pass:

75 miles, 2hr 5 mins (more if you repeat the pass!) https://goo.gl/maps/dVnwLcDA4ZqAq8Rg9

Thanks for the info and all the work on the routes, looks excellent. I will certainly buy an Austrian Vignette as well as a Swiss one this year, much cheaper than the fine!
