I’ve noticed that all A-arms and the exposed frame railings in my M3W have some surface rust and the overall appearance is milky/sporty and does not look right!

What is the best way to restore these back to the nice flat-black finish?

I’ve tried using some spray-on rust inhibitors (permatex), but it started to peel off and turned milky white after the first wash.

I cleaned the surface rust off with emery paper, then used an epoxy primer followed by 2K satin black.

Most people in the UK spray ACF-50 on their exposed (and hidden) metal bits. Bikers swear by the stuff!

I would recommend a paint called "Fortress" from B&Q (don't Laugh) you can get Gloss or Matt, you don't need a primer it goes directly on to any surface as long as its degreased and you remove any loose stuff, I've only used the gloss which gives an excellent finish with a brush.

If you wish a satin finish you'd probably have to buy a tin of Matt and on of Gloss and gradually mix them together until you get the required sheen, I've used this on all my chassis components during the restoration of my Alvis, the only time I used primer was on Alloy castings.

Although I didn't try it myself during M3W ownership I would be tempted to suggest powder coating after suitable prep. Any threads or clearance critical areas would need masking as the finish is very hard after coating.

Ooh. You wouldn't like to post some photos of your Alvis would you ? I'm a bit of a sucker for the old red triangle.
