This just came up on the BBC local news South Today (as Thatcham is in our area). The latest Fiat Panda has received zero stars in the NCAP safety tests, only the second car to do so (and the other was the Fiat Punto last year).

I'm not sure how I'd feel if I owned one but seeing the videos I would certainly think carefully about having children in the rear seats.

Ian, I was put off Italian cars years ago when I had a Lancia Fulvia . The bodywork was rubbish . I wonder what excuse they throw at the public now . Along with future son in law has a Fiat it gave me the shivers but he is at that age where he knows everything . TILL IT GOES WRONG .

It's always ok until it goes wrong, Jack.

ALL crashes are traumatic, they're certainly awful to witness or watch, and as a parent you have to make some risk assessments pretty darn quickly.. The most worrying drive I've ever done was bringing the new borns home from the hospital..!

I've always wondered (usually aided and abetted by a pint or two..) if there's any such thing as a bad new car now, given the world wide stringent safety and build legislation. Maybe this proves that there ARE differences after all.

Don't even mention Morgans..

The NCAP scoring seems a little strange to me. Things like a track holder or a brake assistant which the Panda does not offer, are rated so highly that the values for the structure of the bodywork, for example, are relativized.
If NCAP awards the points in this way, it is probably primarily the purchase of a new car that is to be animated. This way every well-tested car of the younger past without brake assist suddenly looks bad.
I found in the video that the Panda didn't look so bad. The structure at the A pillar remained intact. Of course no S class, but not as bad as the test makes it look.

I agree, they seem to be starting to rate passive safety features more and more highly, and dare I say, ignoring things that help avoid an accident, like ABS, responsive steering and so forth. I thought that for a very small, light car, it did well.

I looked at the videos doe the BMW M140 and the C Class. In front offset and flat impact they all looked similar, but the larger cars did better in the side impacts. Also the Mercedes with its "active bonnet" certainly protected the pedestrians well.

I can't link to the BBC report because it was local news and will disappear from iPlayer in a few hours. The man from Thatcham interviewed singled out the effect of a side-impact on the rear seats. The rear seat passengers collided into each other which, he said, is something they hadn't seen for a very long time.



True the tests are of course much more stringent than the used to be but in this case, they specifically stated you would be better off buying a second-hand model of a safer car.

Many older cars were pretty solid but lacked the added safety devices.
Fewer or no airbags, less engineered crumple zones, no ABS, no traction control, no cut off switch, fixed seatbelts, no side impact bars, no lane sensing, no distance sensors for braking, reactive headrests....
Depending on how far back you go then fewer modern added systems will be present.
I think the system needs updating and a distinction made between crash preventive design and actual passenger protection in a collision carefully distinguished.
Crash prevention rating as one test
Crash performance in a collision as a second test.
There are situations where only one is of concern.
Having been tailended when in a queue of stationary traffic it is the in-crash performance that affected me. Namely rear end crumple performance and whiplash protection. Mk3 Escort and not that high a speed impact.

NCAP is a private operation. Move the goalposts a little, and customers have to return..
