Sounds like a great development.

Wood is and has always been a wonderful engineering material, and now being recognised as a renewable one too, in an earlier life I was working with advanced composites - mainly for racing yacht construction, and apart from very much Grand Prix level construction was looking for a more economic answer that could be utilised for the average mans yacht.
We ended up utilising certain timbers in combination with carbon fibre to give all the right properties desired with the added benefit of ease of construction for one off projects .
I will never forget setting up some samples to be tested to destruction then inviting a number of popular designers at the time to come and observe, after a number of the extremely expensive foam cores failed at limits well before any of the wood composite samples the look of enlightenment spread around the room.

Wood is already a bio-composite, chemically modifying and reforming will take it to the next level.

If the re-shaping under pressure could be done in a purpose designed press - a 21st C version of the wheel arch press used by MMC - then a wood chassis might be possible!! hide

Would this wood be any use in a Morgan as part of the "design" of the current trad is that everything flexes a bit to allow some form of comfort. If they started using this super wood would they have to put proper suspension onto the cars?

This reminds me of “knocking in” a new cricket bat to compress the fibres to prevent cracking. We used either a rounded wooden mallet or a cricket ball stuck onto a handle. Tap, tap tap for a couple of hours. Some manufacturers used to press the new bats as a similar option. It can reduce the spring effect and many modern bats are used uncompressed hence earlier failure.
A lot of wooden beams for roof/floor support are now made up laminated instead of solid wood.
I haven’t read the whole article but fatigue is a possible issue where regular flexing occurs as would happen in a chassis.
I wonder how these superwoods would work out for lintel or I-beam replacement?
The pressing process they describe looks like it would need very hefty warm/hot presses similar to metal forges/presses.

You see particularly in Austria & Switzerland companies making beam of laminated wood of long lengths.

Yes John. I think Japan too as they love wooden structures.
I saw a prog about beams and the laminates were staggered and finger joints use to connect shorter lengths. Modern adhesives have really helped development too.

In a related article, it seems that magnetic wood, and transparent wood are also possible!
