Wood is and has always been a wonderful engineering material, and now being recognised as a renewable one too, in an earlier life I was working with advanced composites - mainly for racing yacht construction, and apart from very much Grand Prix level construction was looking for a more economic answer that could be utilised for the average mans yacht.
We ended up utilising certain timbers in combination with carbon fibre to give all the right properties desired with the added benefit of ease of construction for one off projects .
I will never forget setting up some samples to be tested to destruction then inviting a number of popular designers at the time to come and observe, after a number of the extremely expensive foam cores failed at limits well before any of the wood composite samples the look of enlightenment spread around the room.

Wood is already a bio-composite, chemically modifying and reforming will take it to the next level.

If the re-shaping under pressure could be done in a purpose designed press - a 21st C version of the wheel arch press used by MMC - then a wood chassis might be possible!! hide

Would this wood be any use in a Morgan as part of the "design" of the current trad is that everything flexes a bit to allow some form of comfort. If they started using this super wood would they have to put proper suspension onto the cars?

This reminds me of “knocking in” a new cricket bat to compress the fibres to prevent cracking. We used either a rounded wooden mallet or a cricket ball stuck onto a handle. Tap, tap tap for a couple of hours. Some manufacturers used to press the new bats as a similar option. It can reduce the spring effect and many modern bats are used uncompressed hence earlier failure.
A lot of wooden beams for roof/floor support are now made up laminated instead of solid wood.
I haven’t read the whole article but fatigue is a possible issue where regular flexing occurs as would happen in a chassis.
I wonder how these superwoods would work out for lintel or I-beam replacement?
The pressing process they describe looks like it would need very hefty warm/hot presses similar to metal forges/presses.

You see particularly in Austria & Switzerland companies making beam of laminated wood of long lengths.

Yes John. I think Japan too as they love wooden structures.
I saw a prog about beams and the laminates were staggered and finger joints use to connect shorter lengths. Modern adhesives have really helped development too.

In a related article, it seems that magnetic wood, and transparent wood are also possible!

Does this mean I have to go around looking for the hundreds of people that I have told that Morgan never made a wooden chassis, that there is a change of plan?

Conjure up a vision of a trad on its cart springs hitting a pothole and not bending but shattering instead.

That’s a bit different

Don’t know whether I like it though, doesn’t look like a low sports car. Looks a bit high in the body

Price is good though

Scandinavian is the choice of supplier I use they can make some amazing curved glulam in massive sections for commercial projects with high exposed ceilings like auditoriums

Timber is also a better performer in fire as it's charred surface protects the core, in steel framed buildings you have to coat it in layers of expensive intumescent paint, which guess what, in a fire expands and chars to protect it - clever stuff timber

I have a friend who had to meet with Colonel Gaddafi in his compound some years ago as he wanted to start an automotive industry. He wanted a car designing made from wood which needed to be pointed like a pencil. He demonstrated that if two pencils are pushed into each other, the points will cause the pencils to deflect away from each other so if cars were designed in the same way there would be no issues in the event of a crash. He also wanted leather bags to be hung around the outside of the car to provide further protection to pedestrians and the occupants.

Strangely enough, my friend declined the contract, but only once he had got back home.

I fear you have the wrong forum, Mr F..

However, I asked him to pose but it's not an active day here...where he gets that from, I have NO idea..!

He's not too god with Humbrol glue, either. But he is extremely good at standing on instruction sheets with damp paws..

I can see an offshoot Forum being set up for those assembling, owning these models.
I wonder if you can upgrad one to an RC version to actually drive?

Sospan, they have a "drive" system which consists of steerable wheels, two forward speeds, reverse and neutral. Powered by 16 rubber bands that you wind up by rotating the spare wheel on the rear. Of course you can't change direction or speed once it's moving but it doesn't go that far anyway. RC would be nice but I don't think it would work on this model.
By the way the doors open, the bonnets open, the V8 pistons go up and down and the front has suspension. It's very well engineered and goes together very well.
Brought back memories of when I was a lad, when I made Airfix type models. SWMBO kept making comments like "you're such a kid" and "how's your toy coming along?", but I thoroughly enjoyed assembling it.

I'll go out on a limb and guess that this kit might sap one's energy but I'll bough to the experts on that. Don't drop any wooden bits on the floor though as they just seem to varnish and then you're lumbered with a half finished car.
