We have had a long period without rain and in the last 2 weeks there have been some pretty serious fires faned by winds up to 100kph. There has been the loss of a lot of forest, several homes, but fortunately few injuries.

It seems there are either a few people around who are careless with fires or cigarette buts, or some people who seem to think it is fun to set off a wild fire.

2 Canadair fire-fighter planes were picking up water in front of our house all day. They were water bombing a wild fire that was spreading in high winds in Valbrona which is in the centre of the peninsula which divides Lake Como. It was quite spectacular to watch them come down between the mountains bordering the lake, turn tightly in the narrow space and pick up a load every few minutes. I'm just guessing but I would estimate they flew almost 100 runs between them during the day, probably with a refuel and change of crew after several hours.

These guys are real modern day heroes.

Sorry about the mobile phone quality of the film. I had to zoom in a bit to get it.

Reminds me of the opening scene of Spielberg's film Always - fantastic dolly zoom.

Wow!
We stay in Tremezzo every year (Menaggio 2005-2008 then Tremezzo thereafter) and recall there was a fire in the hills opposite Lenno about 4 or 5 years ago- it took a good 3 years for the “greenness” to start to cover the mountainside again properly. Apparently a local person got prosecuted for stupidity (bonfire/barbecue or summat we heard). It’s the favourite place in the world for Lady H and myself. The middle name of our new Moggie is Milano in honour of our favourite ferry that goes up and down the lake. Would love (if honest) to have seen those big planes scooping over the water instead of the usual tiny seaplanes we see all the time (albeit without the fire). Wish we could live there!!!! Hope all is ok though and people/animals safe.
Take care
HB

Yes. Careful you don't get scooped up in your little boat Peter.

Fantastic. I had no idea you could have raging fires there during this time of year!

Yes, quite awe inspiring. Not only does it require precision flying but also, presumably, physical control of the sudden drag and change of aero dynamics when collecting the water?

Awesome. Adding that load must make keeping control fun.

Thank you for posting. The thought of controlling a machine that is changing in mass and balance at such a rate is mind boggling. Those pilots must be very skilled and heroic.
