I'm surprised it took so long for a drone incident at LHR.
Where next?

This is getting silly

I can only think that the intellegence services have uncovered a plot in recent years for terrorists to try to down an aircraft with a drone over an airport

I can’t see why else they would be so jumpy about stopping aircraft on the evidence of unconfirmed reported sightings

There has already been a significant incident at LHR some time ago.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-39457371

It was flown directly at the aircraft. Amazing that it only got 1 minute on the news back then. If that one got that close today it would be mayhem in the news.

Lets see how this one pans out!

So why oh why have the Heathrow chief Executives done nothing to deal with this situation ? Is it because nothing can be done really apart from press releases saying 'millions will be spent '.

Remember the airport is a complex bucket of companies with roughly aligned interests, making money.

Until the fan blades are rather brown and muddy they will do nothing. The airport operator would cut the PO but the costs will be charged back to all the airlines, retailers and other parties so no one wants the prices up. In the end it will all go back to the traveller. I think we had a thread here just recently about the prices of a sandwich at an airport.

This is not a UK specific issue, anyone heard of a commercial airport that has already deployed something? As I follow this industry I think I might have heard and so far - diddly.

I await the analysis of the cost at LGW and I expect a lot of the airport operators are already making calls to find out. This will be the tipping point to get some trials and pilots in place. There seem to be a couple of vendors in the game. I don't think any of them are are an answer in their own right. I would expect the military will be involved so they can provide backup as they did at LGW. The military will probably also be interested for their own use in a lot of tier 2 locations.

The existing systems tend to perform detection and maybe some electronic suppression but if the drone is under GPS control in order just to disrupt then its down to hardware to knock it down. Given a free range I love the CWIS, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-L0ZAGOuaqg however what goes up must also come down and the people around the airport already have an axe to grind.

As you say, this is going to be a big area in the future. Not just for fear of bomb's, nerve agents and other payloads but for privacy.

Prisons have been the first to move on this. Drones carrying phones and drugs in have been a story for ages. A tender was released last year but was cancelled for some reason. Military bases and some government offices would benefit as well. Those celeb hotels which host the weddings sold to popular magazines for a fortune need to protect the parties involved.

Some changes are probably needed to the law I suspect, not my specialist area. I vote CWIS, take a stand before it becomes a plague. The noise alone is terrifying. Did you see the size of those bullets. I could fit on on top of the MB ML with some of Dave's Neoprene.

So its looking like Drones 1 Authorities and the public 0 for the present unless a phalanx can be made to only hit a drone or two and not hit other aircraft and any bystanders /airport hardware etc . Heathrow and Gatwick along with all other airports may have to shut down at any moment .
What does one do if a drone or two is flying down the M1 or M25 close to traffic ?

Reports of drones, flying black bin liners and police anti-drones 7

Authorities, the public, airlines, The Mail on Sunday and an innocent couple 0

If you are someone with anti social behaviour patterns and can afford a drone, what fun and sense of power is to be had by following the gatwick example and messing up an airport. "Thats will show them"! I guess it has to be the same sort of motivation that makes people write malicious software. Either way, its now been shown how much attention you can get by messing up an airport so there are bound to be copy cat events all over. What an invitation to cranks and would be terrorists.

Difficult to see a working response. The law is a waste of time - there already are laws to prevent drone flights over airports but they are meaningless without a way of enforcement.

Shooting down isnt likely to be effective and in any case there are lots of people around so I doubt that it would be permitted without at least a partial evacuation.

But there is real doubt whether the Gatwick sightings were real or imaginary or police drones or birds. That suggests the ability to disrupt without even flying a drone. Just a phone call maybe enough.
