I just received a phonecall from a very friendly guy.
He claimed to be from Microsoft and informed me my computer got hacked.
He would help me to get it back to secure mode.
I needed some time to understand everything as the helpful guy spoke broken English only.
Nevertheless I finally agreed to start my computer.
It took some time. You know, old computers do need time to start.
After some minutes I told him to be online. He asked me to do push some funny key-combinations which did not work on my keybord. So we needed some more time.

I finally found out, that my computer is not using Microsoft but is an Apple product.
I was quite happy but the supporting fellow from Microsoft was not sharing my happyness.

At least I had some minutes of fun and he did not call anybody else while he was on the phone with me.
What puzzled me: he complained I had stolen his time - but I had not asked for his call. Strange, isn't it?

The next call you get might be from "Apple Support" smile

Yes, I get that too. They really don't like it when you string them along, do they?

When I was phoned in similar fashion I asked him if he wanted me to open a window. After about 20 mins I asked him if I could close the window as I was getting cold. How rude - he put the phone down.

I string them along then put the phone down near the final bit about paying money. It drives them wild, but the bastards conned my MIL.

Have not had the Microsoft support call for a few months now, but do keep getting calls about my Sky Box / Subscription ( I am not a Sky Customer) and also about my BT Router / Subscription.

I suppose if they only get a 1 in 20 hit rate they are getting some money and a lead on who might be susceptible to other scams.

I have adted a couple of responses.
1. “ Dyfed Powys Police....how can I help you?”
“You are through to a monitoring line as part of an investigation”
Please give me your details”
2. “OK, but can you please stay online a moment ....I have to switch a couple of things on and off”
I then wait a while and go back.” Sorry about that but I was making a cup of coffee and forgot you were online” ...this works better if they are trying to get my attention again.
3. Speak Welsh to them.

We usedto get calls into us in Dyfed Powys re such calls. A low success rate by the scammers can still be devastating for the victims. We had one case where an elderly man was in serious danger of losing his home.
About 20 minutes ago I had a call and when I asked who they wanted to speak to the male said Mr Bush. I have had that response before.
Never, ever give out details if asked. If a genuine call then they would not need them.

I consider it a sport to see how long I can string them along.

SWMBO thinks I am wasting my time, but while they are trying to scam me, they are unable to tackle other more guillible victims, so I feel I am doing my bit to help.

We have the BT call protect on our landline. You have to say who is calling before we answer unless you are on our known persons list. Works very well.

Yes, we have caller recognition and it is surprising how many "international" and "out of area" calls we get, that we don't pick up. What annoys me is the "spam" calls I get on my mobile. How do they get the number.

In most cases they don't get your number. They have computerised dial tools that just dial numbers sequentially. If it is answered and there is a noise then it is connected with a scumbag to waste your time.

The worst thing is answering these as the computer dial tool will then mark this number as active for future calls. I don't answer anything not in my list and if they leave a voicemail I reply.

Android and iOS have the ability to block future calls. If you get a number calling again and again and not leaving a message you hit the info icon and down the page is a "block" option. You will not see this number again.

It works on MiL's as well allegedly.

You may well be vetted because he hasn't put you on his trusted list.

With caller ID on the land line and mobile if I don't recognise the number I let it ring on, the time wasters never leave a message I have noticed.

My parents use a call blocker as well (on the BT4600), but send any numbers not in their phonebook straight to the answerphone. Seems to work well.
