I occasionally had to tap the solenoid (with a piece of wood )on the top of the motor to unstick it.

Yes to work efficiently the solenoid armature has to be a close fit to the soft iron core surrounding it, which provides the magnetic field to energise. A tiny amount of corrosion on the armature can cause it to partially jam giving rise to the temporary cure of tapping it with a soft hammer.

The most unusual problem I had with a clicking solenoid was a hairline crack in the battery positive terminal.

If it's the Jag one fitted to mine then it already is a high torque type, the problem with mine was that it was over greased and the dust from the clutch gummed up the works in the solenoid.

Stripped it down cleaned it leaving the shaft grease free, put it back on and it worked a treat.

I had a similar problem on a K series caterham, that didn't like to start when the engine was hot. Being a passenger on a track day with my son facing oncoming traffic at Brands following a spin, reminds you why you need a reliable starter!

It was finally tracked down to the starter not being exactly square to the flywheel and ring gear this was exaggerated when hot, effectively jamming the starter. Being tucked up under the exhaust manifold, didn't help either. A high torque replacement and some fettling of the mounting flange to square it up, solved the problem.

Not spinning also helps blush

Well as I had time today & it is a balmy 10c so I started the testing.
To my joy when I used a jump lead as a second earth it started. Take of the jump lead a it would only click.

The earth from the engine is hard to reach. I had to take off the air filter for access.

I cleaned up the contact areas & rebuilt it.
Will now buy a second earth lead as belt and braces.

Yes Richard. I spent last week on holiday worrying about it.
The crazy part is the earth looked fine & was tight.

Good result John. As the chassis is an important part of this high current circuit it may be worth checking the negative battery connection to it as well.

Ohms law dictates that a fixed resistance will create a volt drop proportional to current.
